age, will be admitted to compete for any two or all three of
these services, subject to the following conditions:—
(1.) They must enter and return to the Secretary, Civil
Service Commission, within the time limited by the several
regulations, an application on the form prescribed for each
of the respective services.*
(2.) Every successful candidate who may have been ad-
mitted to compete for either the India or the colonial
service (or both), as well as for the Home service, will be
called upon to declare, immediately after the announce-
ment of the result of the competitions, whether he prefers
his name to remain on the list of candidates for the India
or colonial service or on the list of candidates for clerk-
ships in the Home Civil Service. The name of any
candidate who fails to declare his choice when called upon
to do so will be removed from the list of candidates for
clerkships in the Home Civil Service.
(3.) Every successful candidate who may have been ad-
mitted to compete for both the India and colonial services
will be called upon to declare, immediately after the an-
nouncement of the result of the competitions, whether he
prefers his name to remain on the list of candidates for the
Civil Service of India or on the list of candidates for
Eastern cadetships in the colonial service. The name of
any candidate who fails to declare his choice when called
upon to do so will be removed from the list of candidates
for Eastern cadetships.
(4.) All declarations of choice are irrevocable.
(5.) Candidates for all three or any two of the above-
mentioned services will be required to pay a consolidated
fee of £6.

THE following Notice to Mariners, received from the
Department of Navigation, Sydney, New South
Wales, is published for general information.

ADDITIONAL GREEN LIGHT AT ENTRANCE TO PORT OF NEW-
CASTLE, N.S.W.

Department of Navigation,
Sydney, 27th August, 1906.

It is hereby notified that, on and after the first proximo, the
following important alteration in the existing system of
marks showing the fairway at the entrance to the Port of
Newcastle will be made: An additional green light will be
exhibited on a pile-light beacon from sunset to sunrise
34 ft. above L.W. springs, and 900 ft. S. 58° W. from the
existing green-light beacon.
The following directions will be observed: Outward-
bound vessels will keep the fairway leading-towers in line
until bringing the green-light beacons in line; this intersec-
tion will be found to occur when Nobby’s Lighthouse bears
S. 52° E. The green-light beacons should then be kept in
line through a channel N. 57½° E., carrying 22 ft. L.W.
springs: all bearings magnetic.

New Zealand International Exhibition, 1906. — Minerals
Court.

Mines Department,
Wellington, 30th July, 1906.

A GOLD medal and fifty guineas, a silver medal and
twenty-five guineas, and a bronze medal and ten
guineas will be awarded by the Mines Department for
essays on the present condition and future prospects of the
mineral resources of New Zealand, and the best means of
fostering their development.
In judging the merits of the essays preference will be
given to those which are of a practical character.
The essays must be sent in to the Under-Secretary for
Mines, Wellington, signed with a motto, and accompanied
by a sealed envelope containing the author’s name and
address, on or before 1st December, 1906.


  • Candidates who may desire to enter the competitions for the
    Home and colonial services should apply, about the beginning
    of February next, to the Secretary, Civil Service Commission,
    London, W., for the prescribed forms of application.

The essays will be submitted to a Board of three persons
(to be hereafter appointed), on whose decision the above
prizes will be awarded.
NOTE.—“Mineral” means any metal or mineral, and in-
cludes petroleum and other mineral oils.

Circuit for Appellate Court Sittings appointed.

IT is hereby notified for general information that, in
pursuance of the reorganization of the Native Land
Court now being effected, a circuit has been arranged for
the Native Appellate Court, and that sittings of that Court
have been appointed to be held at the places and on the
dates following:—

New Plymouth .. 2nd October, 1906.
Auckland .. 16th October, 1906.
Russell .. 6th November, 1906.
Paeroa .. 15th January, 1907.
Rotorua .. 12th February, 1907.
Ngaruawahia .. 12th March, 1907.
Gisborne .. 9th April, 1907.
Hastings .. 13th May, 1907.
Wellington .. 11th June, 1907.
Wanganui .. 16th July, 1907.

The ordinary notices, with lists of cases, will be printed
in the Gazette and Kahiti from time to time, and circulated
as heretofore.
Special sittings may be arranged, if necessary, to deal with
urgent cases, by communicating with the President of the
Native Appellate Court, Auckland.

Notice of Date of Examination.

Education Department,
Wellington, 6th June, 1906.

NOTICE is hereby given that a Civil Service Junior
Examination and a Junior National Scholarship and
Free Place Examination will be held in December, 1906,
beginning on or about the eleventh day of the month; and
that a Civil Service Senior Examination and an examination
for teachers’ certificates of Class C and Class D will be
held in January, 1907, beginning on or about the 6th day of
the month.
The Civil Service Junior Examination is prescribed as the
examination which holders of Junior National Scholarships
are required to pass at the end of the second year of their
scholarships (Junior Scholarship Continuation Examina-
tion). It is also a qualifying examination for senior free
places in secondary schools and district high schools;
further, it is the first examination for pupil-teachers.
With the Junior National Scholarship Examination will
be taken the Junior Free Place Examination (including the
examination for junior free places in technical schools),
and candidates may qualify for junior free places in either
examination.
Entries for the examinations for Junior National Scholar-
ships, for Junior Free Places, for National Scholarship
Continuation, and for Senior Free Places must be made
through the principals or head teachers of the schools
attended, and will be received by Secretaries of Education
Boards not later than the 30th September, 1906.
Entries for other examinations will be received by the
Inspector-General of Schools, at Wellington, until the 30th
September, 1906, or, with a late fee of £1 in addition to the
ordinary fee, until the 15th October, 1906.
All entries must be made on the proper forms, which may
be obtained from the office of any Education Board or of the
Education Department.
Candidates for Senior National Scholarships are reminded
that, in forwarding to the University authorities their appli-
cation to be admitted to the examination for a Junior
University Scholarship, they must at the same time give
notice of their intention to compete for a Senior National
Scholarship.
Candidates who have to pass in elementary handwork
for the teachers’ certificate, or otherwise, are examined at
various times and places. Those who desire to be examined
in good time in this subject are recommended to apply
early.
