Changing the Purpose of a Portion of a Reserve in Canterbury Land District.

PLUNKET, Governor.

WHEREAS the land described in the Schedule hereto forms part of a reserve heretofore duly set apart for plantation purposes, being a reserve within Class I of “The Public Reserves Act, 1881,” and such land has not been vested in trust in any society, body corporate, or trustees:

And whereas it is expedient that such land shall be appropriated for a public recreation-ground, being a reserve within Class III of the aforesaid Act:

Now, therefore, I, William Lee, Baron Plunket, the Governor of the Colony of New Zealand, in exercise of the powers and authorities vested in me by the second section of “The Public Reserves Act Amendment Act, 1889,” do by this notification declare that the said reserve shall, from and after the sixth day of September, one thousand nine hundred and six, be appropriated for a public recreation-ground under Class III of “The Public Reserves Act, 1881”; and I do hereby direct that this notification shall be published in the New Zealand Gazette.

SCHEDULE.

All that area in the Canterbury Land District, containing 138 acres, more or less, being Reserve No. 3731 (formerly portion of Reserve No. 1579), situated in Blocks XII and XVI, Rangiora Survey District. Bounded towards the north by the road forming the southern boundary of Reserve No. 3728; towards the east by the Beach Reserve, 2000 links distant from the high-water mark of the ocean; towards the south by Reserve No. 3658; and towards the west generally by the Saltwater Creek, the south-east and north-east boundaries of Section No. 13686, road-lines forming north-west boundary of same, and north-east boundaries of Sections Nos. 22535 and 22534, also by the south-west and south-east boundaries of Section No. 11323 (11361) to the commencing-point: as the same is more particularly delineated on the plan marked S.G. 25226/36, deposited in the Head Office, Department of Lands, at Wellington, and thereon bordered pink.

Rural Lands in Wellington Land District open for Sale or Selection.

PLUNKET, Governor.

IN pursuance and exercise of the powers and authorities conferred upon me by section one hundred and thirty-six of “The Land Act, 1892,” and section two of “The Bush and Swamp Crown Lands Settlement Act, 1903,” I, William Lee, Baron Plunket, the Governor of the Colony of New Zealand, do hereby declare and provide as follows, that is to say:—

  1. The rural lands described in the Schedule hereto are hereby set apart for disposal by way of sale or selection on and after the thirtieth day of October, one thousand nine hundred and six, at the respective prices specified in the said Schedule.

  2. The said lands may be purchased for cash, or be selected for occupation with right of purchase, or on lease in perpetuity: provided that in the case of lands containing or supposed to contain any metal, mineral, or valuable stone, they shall be selected on lease in perpetuity only and shall not be purchased for cash.

  3. For the purposes of “The Bush and Swamp Crown Lands Settlement Act, 1903,” the lands described in the said Schedule hereto shall be deemed to be “heavy-bush land.”

  4. No general rate shall be levied or collected by any local authority from the said lands for a period of four years from the date from which in each case respectively such lands are disposed of, and no local authority shall have power to levy or collect any such rate from such lands during such period.

  5. After the first half-year’s rent has been paid by the selector the further instalments of rent payable by him for a period of four years shall not be demanded: provided that if at any time during the first five years of his occupancy the selector disposes of his interest in the land the rent so conceded shall be paid by him in full, and thereupon the Land Board may remit such instalments of rent payable by the incoming tenant, not exceeding in the aggregate the amount of rent previously conceded to the selector, as the Board shall think fit.

Situated in the northern portion of the Tauakira Block, on the eastern side of the watershed between Wanganui and Wangaehu Rivers. Access from Wanganui, about twenty-nine miles distant, via Field’s Track, Parebauhau, Te Komai, and Mangawhawhi Roads, which are formed for dray traffic for about twenty miles. Of the remaining distance, five miles is formed bridle-track, and the balance surveyed road only. Comprises rough hilly land, with a few small flats; good soil, resting on papa formation; fairly heavy forest of tawa, rata, hinau, tawhero, rewarewa, together with some rimu and kahikatea, and a thick undergrowth of the usual kind. Watered by small streams. Elevation, from about 1,000 ft. to 2,000 ft. above sea-level.

Situated in the Umutoi Block, and fronts the Conspicuous Road. Access from Apiti Township, about seven miles distant—five miles and a half by Apiti-Rangiwahia Main Road, formed and metalled; remainder by Conspicuous Road, formed for dray traffic to within half a mile of the section; the last half-mile is passable for horse traffic. Comprises rough, broken country; has rather a bad frontage, but improves towards the back; soil rather inferior, light quality, resting on papa formation; fairly heavy forest, comprising birch, white-pine, hinau, maire, and tawhero, with a sprinkling of rimu, miro, matai, and a thick undergrowth of the usual variety. Well watered by springs and small streams. “Thirds” will accrue for a period of fourteen years and a half.
