SCHEDULE.
NELSON LAND DISTRICT.—INANGAHUA COUNTY.—MARUIA NORTH BLOCK.
Second-class Unsurveyed Heavy-bush Land.
| Survey District. | Block. | Area. | Lease in Perpetuity: Rent per Acre per Annum. |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lyell | XV, XVI | Acres. | d. |
| Tutaki | I, V, IX | 19,311 | 3·6 to 7·2. |
| Maruia | III, IV, VII, VIII, XI, XII |
Shown on plan marked L. & S. 55390.
Maruia North Block is a belt of country from two to three miles wide forming the valley of the Maruia River, extending southerly from the confluence of the Buller River with the Maruia River along both banks of the latter for a distance of about nine miles. The altitude varies from 460 ft. to 3,000 ft. above sea-level.
The land is timber-clad, consisting of brown- and black-birch, scattered rimu, black and white-pine, miro, mountain totara, and rata, with underscrub of broadleaf, five-finger, pepper-tree, maple, fuchsia, &c.
The soil varies from good along the river-banks and flats to fair on the spurs and slopes. The formation is limestone, sandstone, and granite rocks. The whole area is well watered, has a northern aspect, and carries good grass when cleared. It is well adapted for fruit-growing and for pastoral purposes. Each subdivision has sufficient flat land for homestead-site.
The Town of Murchison is distant in an easterly direction about eight miles from the block along a dray-road. The City of Nelson is distant about ninety miles, and the Town of Reefton about sixty miles. A through road to the latter will be made eventually via the Maruia Plains Block.
The main coach-road is along the Buller River at the northern boundary of the block. The mail-coach passes twice a week.
The Nelson–Reefton Railway will be, when constructed, in close proximity to the block. A good horse-track is now being made along the east bank of the river by the County Council, and other tracks will be formed to give access to the lands as they are taken up.
As witness the hand of His Excellency the Governor, this sixth day of July, one thousand nine hundred and six.
