PACIFIC OCEAN.

St. Mathias Isl.—This isl. is reported to be shown on the chart considerably to the srd. of its correct position. As this confirms prev. information received on the subject, this isl. has been moved on the charts 11½ miles N. 26° W. from the position it has hitherto occupied, its nrn.-most pt. being placed in 1° 17′ S., 149° 31½′ E.

Viti Levu.—Nandi Waters.—On 1st June, 1906, the following F. white lts., elev. 42 ft. above H.W., R. 10 miles, are to be exh. from white lt.-hs. on black piles: (1) In 17° 55¼′ S., 177° 13¼′ E., on the srn. end of Navula Reef, nrn. side of Navula Passage; (2) in 17° 39¼′ S., 177° 23′ E., on the wrn. extr. of the reef, 1¼ miles srd. of Na Koro Koro Pt.

NORTH AMERICA.—WEST COAST.

Lennard Isl.—A fog-trumpet (worked by compressed air), sounding one blast of 5 secs. dura. every 30 secs., is est. in a white wooden fog-sig. house, with red roof, in 49° 6¾′ N., 125° 56′ W., ½ cable S.-erd. from Lennard Isl. Lt.-h.

Barkley Sound.—A F. white lt. (U), elev. 60 ft. above H.W., R. 13 miles, is exh. from a white rectangular lt.-h. in 48° 55¼′ N., 125° 33¼′ W., on Amphitrite Pt., entr. to the sound.

Discovery Isl. Lt.—On 1st June, 1906, this lt. (48° 25¼′ N., 123° 13¾′ W.) is to be altered from F. white to an occ. white lt., without further change.

Osborn Bay.—A F. white lt. (U), elev. 33 ft. above H.W., R. 10 miles, is exh. from a small white rectangular lt.-h., in 48° 53′ N., 123° 37¾′ W., on the S.-ern.-most of the Shoal Isls. forming the nrn. extr. of the bay. This lt. is named Crofton lt.

Blunts Reef Lt.-v.—On 10th May, 1906, Lt.-v. No. 83 (40° 26′ N., 124° 30′ W.) is to be temp. replaced by a red whistle-buoy, marked “Light-vessel moorings” in black. When returned to her station, the fog-whistle of this lt.-v. is to be altered to sound blasts of 2 secs. dura. every 30 secs.

San Francisco Lt.-v.—On 2nd April, 1906, Lt.-v. No. 70 (37° 45′ N., 122° 41′ W.) was temp. replaced by a red lt.-buoy, marked “Light-vessel moorings” in black, exh. an F. white lt.

Approx. position: Lat. 38° 04′ 19″ N., long. 122° 15′ 19″ W.

BAY OF BENGAL.

Rangoon River Entrance.—Shoal in Approach.—Information has been received that in a recent survey of the Port of Rangoon a shoal, with from 3 ft. to 6 ft. of water over it, about 1,600 yards in length and 500 yards broad, trending in a N.N.E.—S.S.W. direction, was located to the south-eastward of centre eastern buoy, Rangoon River. The northern end of the shoal lies about 800 yards S. 73° E. true (E.S.E. ⅔ E. mag.), and the southern end about 1,800 yards S. 3° E. true (S. ⅓ E. mag.) from centre eastern buoy.

BRITISH COLUMBIA.

Vancouver Island.—East Coast.—Little Group.—Dock Island.—Alteration in Light.—The Canadian Government has given notice that on 7th March, 1906, the light heretofore shown from a 31-day Wigham lamp on the summit of a small square wooden tower on Dock Island, Sidney Channel, east coast of Vancouver Island, was replaced by a gaslight shown from a beacon erected on the same site.

The beacon consists of a steel cylindrical tank standing on a steel framework and surmounted by a pyramidal steel frame supporting a lantern, the whole painted red. The height of the structure from the ground to the top of the lantern is 24 ft.

The light is intermittent white, automatically eclipsed at short intervals. It is elevated 40 ft. above high-water mark, and should be visible 10 miles from all points of approach by water.

The illuminant is acetylene, generated automatically. The light is unwatched.

Approximate position on H.O. Chart No. 2231: Lat. 48° 40′ 19″ N., long. 123° 20′ 59″ W.

JAVA.

North Coast.—Batavia Roadstead.—Hydrographic Information.—The Netherlands Government gives notice that the master of the Netherlands steamer “Telegraaf” reports the following shoals in Batavia roadstead, north coast of Java:—

A shoal, about 55 yards in extent, with a least depth of 14 ft. of water over it, fine coral bottom, in (approximately) latitude 6° 04′ 30″ S., longitude 106° 51′ 48″ E. A black and white horizontally striped can buoy, surmounted by a cross, has been moored on the eastern side of this shoal.

A coral reef, about 65 yards in extent, with a least depth of 7 ft. of water over it, in (approximately) latitude 6° 04′ 02″ S., longitude 106° 51′ 13″ E.

A coral reef, about 44 yards in extent, with a least depth of 11 ft. of water over it, in (approximately) latitude 6° 04′ 07″ S., longitude 106° 50′ 58″ E.

These two coral reefs, separated by depths of about 7 fathoms, are situated to the westward of Vader Smit Reef, and between the reefs and Vader Smit Reef soundings of 7 fathoms are found.

The black can buoy surmounted by a cone, marking Brunda Reef, is located on the southern and not the northern side of the reef in (approximately) latitude 6° 04′ 12″ S., longitude 106° 55′ 09″ E.

THE following Notices to Mariners, received from the Hydrographic Office, Washington, D.C., United States of America, are published for general information.

CALIFORNIA.

Piedras Blancas Light-station.—Fog-signal Established.—Referring to Notice to Mariners No. 12 (439) of 1906, further notice is given that on 10th April, 1906, there was established at Piedras Blancas Light-station, located on the sea-coast of California, on a point about 5 miles to the northward and westward of San Simeon Point and the entrance to San Simeon Bay and behind the rock known as Piedra Blanca, a 10 in. whistle, operated by compressed air, to sound, during thick or foggy weather, blasts of 2 seconds duration, separated by silent intervals of 20 seconds.

The fog-signal house is a brick structure near the western extremity of the point and 170 ft. westward from the light-tower. There is also a new dwelling, painted white with red roof, 125 ft. north-eastward from the tower.

Approx. position: Lat. 35° 39′ 51″ N., long. 121° 17′ 05″ W.

San Francisco Bay.—East Brother Island Light-station.—Damaged by Earthquake.—The intensity of the light at East Brother Island Light-station, located on the easternmost of the Brothers Islands, ⅞ mile S. 65° 15′ W. true (S.W. ¼ W. mag.) from point San Pablo, in the strait connecting San Francisco and San Pablo Bays, has been temporarily decreased by changing from a 4th-order to a lens-lantern light on account of damage by earthquake.

Approx. position: Lat. 37° 57′ 42″ N., long. 122° 26′ 01″ W.

San Pablo Bay.—Mare Island Light-station.—Damaged by Earthquake.—The intensity of the light at Mare Island Light-station, located on the southern end of Mare Island, at the northern side of the entrance from San Pablo Bay to Carquinez Strait and the western side of the entrance to Napa Creek, has been temporarily decreased by changing from a 4th-order to a lens-lantern light, on account of damage by earthquake.

Fishing-vessels, Lights, and Signals: New Regulations.

THE following additional regulations for preventing collisions at sea, and relating to the lights to be carried and signals to be made by fishing vessels, have been made by His Majesty the King in Council, such regulations to take effect from 1st May, 1906. These regulations are by virtue of section 191 of “The Shipping and Seamen Act, 1903,” in force in New Zealand.
