to Long Harbour. This shoal is marked by tide-rips with a stream of any strength.

Approximate position of southern point of entrance to Long Harbour, latitude 48° 50′ 30″ N., longitude 123° 25′ 45″ W.

VANCOUVER ISLAND.—EAST COAST.—PORTIER PASS.—SHOALS.—The following information, dated 29th September, 1905, the result of a recent survey, has been received from Captain J. F. Parry, H.B.M. surveying vessel “Egeria,” respecting the dangers in Portier Pass, east coast of Vancouver Island:—

The rock situated about 100 yards south-westward of Race Point Lighthouse dries 4 ft. at low water.

Romulus Rock has a depth of 5 ft. (not 2½ fathoms) over it at low water, and is situated at a distance of 800 yards S. 40° W. true (S. by W. ⅓ W. w’ly mag.) from Race Point Lighthouse. A rocky head with a depth of 4 ft. over it at low water exists at a distance of 800 yards S. 50° W. true (S.S.W. ¼ W. w’ly mag.) from Race Point Lighthouse.

Romulus Rock is the south-eastern extremity of a rocky patch 250 yards long in a north-west by north and south-east by south (magnetic) direction and about 200 yards broad. The general depths between Romulus and Black Rocks are from 3 to 5 fathoms. Black Rock dries 11 ft. at low water.

A shoal with a depth of 24 ft. over it at low water exists at a distance of 980 yards S. 24° W. true (south mag.) from Race Point Lighthouse. There is another rocky head with a depth of 5 fathoms over it situated at a distance of 100 yards N. 3° W. true (N.N.W. ⅔ W. mag.) from this rock.

A large rocky patch 250 yards long in a north-north-west and south-south-east (magnetic) direction and about 125 yards broad, and having several heads of from 3 ft. to 6 ft. over them at low water, exists nearly midway between Race Point and Valdes Island. The southernmost head of this danger is situated at a distance of 460 yards N. 40° W. true (N.W. by W. ⅓ W. w’ly mag.) from Race Point Lighthouse.

A small rocky head with a depth of 5 fathoms over it exists at a distance of 300 yards N. 2° E. true (N. by W. ⅓ W. w’ly mag.) from Race Point Lighthouse.

Approximate position of Race Point Lighthouse, latitude 49° 1′ N., longitude 123° 35′ W.

Owing to the oblique direction and strength of the tides in Portier Pass, and its very limited breadth, vessels should not make use of it.

Notice to Mariners No. 1 of 1906.

Marine Department,
Wellington, 6th January, 1906.

THE following Notices to Mariners, received from the Government of Natal, Africa, and from the Government of Madras, India, respectively, are published for general information.

WM. HALL-JONES.

AFRICA.—SOUTH-EAST COAST.

Aliwal Shoal Lights and Beacons—New Green Point Lighthouse.

THE Government of Natal give notice that on the 16th October, 1905, the existing lights at the headlands of Umpambinyoni and Amahlongwana, each showing a red light over the Aliwal Shoal, will be discontinued, and replaced by a 2nd order double-flashing dioptric bright light above Green Point, showing a double flash every 15 seconds, and a 4th order subsidiary red light showing a fixed belt over an arc of 30 degrees, and shining over the Aliwal Shoal. The two new lights will be in the same tower, and the focal plane of the subsidiary red light will be 34 ft. below the focal plane of the double-flashing light.

The elevation of the base on which the new tower stands is 231 ft. above H.W.O.S.T. The balcony-floor is 40 ft. above the level of the base, and the tip of the weather-vane 68 ft. above the base.

The focal plane of the double-flashing light is 282 ft. above H.W.O.S.T., and the focal plane of the subsidiary red light 248 ft. above H.W.O.S.T.

The position of the new tower will be 30 degrees 15 minutes 12 seconds S. latitude, 30 degrees 46 minutes 51½ seconds E. longitude.

The iron conical tower is painted with red and white bands, and the lantern painted white. It is placed immediately behind the site of the old inland or westward beacon on the headland above Green Point, and is on the line of leading-marks bearing on the Aliwal Shoal. The inland or westward beacon has been removed. The existing seaward or eastern beacon, latitude 30 degrees 15 minutes 15 seconds S., and longitude 30 degrees 47 minutes 5 seconds E., will remain unaltered, and the line of leading-marks indicating the Aliwal Shoal is the seaward or eastern beacon bearing upon the centre of the new Green Point Lighthouse.

The double-flashing dioptric light will be visible between the true bearings N. 22 degrees E. to S. 33 degrees W., or, assuming the magnetic variation of 23 degrees 30 minutes W., through the magnetic bearings N. 45½ E. to S. 56½ W. The subsidiary red light will be visible between the true bearings N. 61½ W. and S. 88½ W., or between the magnetic bearings N. 38 W. and N. 68 W.

The double-flashing light should be visible from a distance of 23 nautical miles in clear weather.

The intensity of the flash is 240,000 candles.

Engineer, Natal Harbour Works.

INDIA.—EAST COAST.—GULF OF MANAAR.—TUTICORIN.

Alteration in Column.

It is hereby notified for the information of mariners that from and after the 1st February, 1906, to enable the light-house to be easily located during hazy weather, the existing “Sandstone column, coloured brown, lantern white,” of the Gulf of Manaar, Tuticorin (Hare Island), light will be altered to “Masonry column with four alternative equal bands of white and black, white at the top.”

Notice to Mariners No. 3 of 1906.

Marine Department,
Wellington, 12th January, 1906.

THE following Notice to Mariners, received from the Marine Board, Port Adelaide, South Australia, is published for general information.

WM. HALL-JONES.

GULF ST. VINCENT.—PORT ADELAIDE RIVER.

MASTERS of vessels, pilots, and others are hereby notified that a black buoy has been placed to mark the edge of the north bank, at a position near where the inner green-light beacon formerly stood. As this buoy will probably need to be moved slightly as the work of deepening the outer harbour progresses, it must be taken only as indicating the edge of the shoal, and vessels navigating that part of the channel should not approach it within 50 ft.

NOTE.—This affects Admiralty Charts Nos. 2389B, 1750, and 1752.

ARTHUR SEARCY,
President of the Marine Board.

Marine Board Offices, Port Adelaide,
12th December, 1905.
