Claims.—(1.) A gate having a stationary upper hinge-connection and an eccentrically shiftable lower hinge-connection, said lower hinge-connection comprising a stationary cam and a projection on the gate engaging the cam, and means operated from the roadway on either side of the gate to shift said projection to throw the gate into unstable equilibrium to effect the opening or closing of the gate. (2.) A gate having a ball-bearing hinge at the top and shiftable hinge-connections at the bottom, and means for operating said bottom hinge-connections to place the gate in unstable equilibrium to effect the opening or closing of the gate. (3.) A gate having a stationary hinge-connection at the top and shiftable hinge-connections at the bottom, said latter connections including a cam, a part on the gate slidable on said cam, and means for moving the gate on the cam to place the gate in unstable equilibrium to effect the opening or closing of the gate. (4.) A gate having a stationary hinge-connection at the top and shiftable hinge-connections at the bottom, said latter connections including a cam, a part on the gate slidable on said cam, and means for moving the gate on the cam to place the gate in unstable equilibrium to effect the opening or closing of the gate, said means for moving the gate including a lever having a forked or slotted part to engage the gate. (5.) A gate having a stationary hinge-connection at the top and shiftable hinge-connections at the bottom, said latter connections including a cam, a part on the gate slidable on said cam, and means for moving the gate on the cam to place the gate in unstable equilibrium to effect the opening or closing of the gate, said means for moving the gate including a lever having a forked or slotted part to engage the gate, an appliance in the roadway disposed in the path of a vehicle, and adjustable flexible connections between said appliance and the lever to oscillate said lever on the suitable operation of said appliance.
