Rural Lands in Westland Land District open for Selection on Lease in Perpetuity.

PLUNKET, Governor.
IN pursuance and exercise of the powers and authorities conferred upon me by section one hundred and thirty-six of “The Land Act, 1892,” and section two of “The Bush and Swamp Crown Lands Settlement Act, 1903,” I, William Lee, Baron Plunket, the Governor of the Colony of New Zealand, do hereby declare and provide as follows, that is to say,——

The rural lands described in the Schedule hereto are hereby set apart for disposal by way of selection on and after the fifteenth day of November, one thousand nine hundred and five, at the rentals specified in the said Schedule.

The said lands may be selected on lease in perpetuity only, as provided by section one hundred and twenty-one of “The Land Act, 1892,” as they contain, or are supposed to contain, metal, mineral, or valuable stone, and shall not be purchased for c t

For the purposes of “The Bush and Swamp Crown Lands Settlement Act, 1903,” the lands described in the said Schedule hereto shall be deemed to be “heavy-bush land.”

No general rate shall be levied or collected by any local authority from the said lands for the period of four years from the date from which in each case respectively such lands are disposed of, and no local authority shall have power to levy or collect any such rate from such lands during such period.

After the first half-year’s rent has been paid by the selector the further instalments of rent payable by him for a period of four years shall not be demanded: provided that if at any time during the first five years of his occupancy the selector disposes of his interest in the land the rent so conceded shall be paid by him in full, and thereupon the Land Board may remit such instalments of rent payable by the incoming tenant, not exceeding in the aggregate the amount of rent previously conceded to the selector, as the Board shall think fit.

About 18 acres of this section fronting the river is flat, with silver-birch (chiefly) and scrub, with good soil. The balance lies on a high terrace with large brown and silver birch, and poor soil. The undergrowth is light and the area well watered. Altitude, 230 ft. to 310 ft. above sea-level. Access by road from Ahaura, across ford on Grey River, and thence by road on right bank of Big River—five miles and a half to Ahaura Railway-station.

Broken hilly country, covered with brown-birch on hill-sides, with small rata, rimu, and birch on the tops; light undergrowth; soil poor; well watered. Altitude, 260 ft. to 660 ft. above sea-level. Access by road from Ahaura, across ford on Grey River, and thence by road on right bank of Big River—six miles to Ahaura Railway-station.

About one-half of this section is low terrace, with brown and silver birch and light undergrowth. The soil is fair on low terrace. The balance is high terrace land covered with brown and silver birch, with scattered pines, and the soil is shallow and poor. The section is well watered throughout. Altitude is 190 ft. to 330 ft. above sea-level. Access by road from Ahaura, across ford on Grey River, and thence by road on right bank of Big River—four miles to Ahaura Railway-station.

About one-half of this section is broken, covered with brown-birch and a few scattered pines; light undergrowth and poor soil. The balance is terrace land, with brown and silver birch, light undergrowth, and very fair soil. The area well watered throughout. Altitude, 195 ft. to 670 ft. above sea-level. Access by road from Ahaura, across ford on Grey River, and thence by road on right bank of Big River—three miles to Ahaura Railway-station.

IN pursuance and exercise of the powers and authorities conferred upon me by the one-hundred-and-thirty-sixth section of “The Land Act, 1892,” I, William Lee, Baron Plunket, the Governor of the Colony of New Zealand, having received the report of the Surveyor-General in this behalf, as in the said section is provided, do hereby declare that the rural lands described in the Schedule hereto shall be open for selection on and after the twenty-fourth day of October, one thousand nine hundred and five; and also that the lands mentioned in the said Schedule may be selected on lease in perpetuity only, in accordance with the provisions of section one hundred and twenty-one of the said Act, as they contain, or are supposed to contain, metals, minerals, or valuable stone; and I do hereby also fix the prices at which the said lands shall be leased, as mentioned in the said Schedule hereto, and do declare that the said lands shall be leased under and subject to the provisions of “The Land Act, 1892.”

Weighted with £15, valuation for improvements. This section has a good aspect, but the soil is inferior; good grazing-land, with a good sole of native grass; too steep for cultivation; altitude, 1,450 ft. Situated about a mile from Weatherstone Post-office and School.

WHEREAS by the two-hundred-and-thirty-fifth section of “The Land Act, 1892,” it is enacted that the Governor may from time to time, either by general or particular description, and whether the same has been surveyed or not, reserve from sale temporarily, notwithstanding that the same may be then held under pastoral license, any Crown lands which in his opinion are required for any of the purposes in the said section mentioned:
Now, therefore, I, William Lee, Baron Plunket, the Governor of the Colony of New Zealand, in exercise and pursuance of the powers and authorities vested in me by the said Act, do hereby temporarily reserve from sale the land in the Auckland Land District described in the Schedule hereunder written, for the purpose in the said Schedule specified at the end of the description of the land so intended to be temporarily reserved.
