of Customs, hereby directed that the business of a mercantile marine office shall be conducted at each Customhouse in the colony, except at the Ports of Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton, and Dunedin, and, for the purposes of that business, the Collector of Customs for the time being at each port, with the exception of those named above, is appointed a Superintendent within the meaning of the said Act.

Notice of Intention to take Land in Cape Survey District for a Post-office.

NOTICE is hereby given that it is proposed, under the provisions of “The Public Works Act, 1894,” to execute a certain public work, to wit, the construction of a Post-office at Pungarehu, and for the purposes of such public work the land described in the Schedule hereto is required to be taken. And notice is hereby further given that the plan of the land so required to be taken is deposited in the Post-office, Pungarehu, and is there open for inspection; and that all persons affected by the execution of the said public work or by the taking of the said land should, if they have any well-grounded objections to the execution of the said public work or to the taking of such land, set forth the same in writing, and send such writing, within forty days from the first publication of this notice, to the Minister for Public Works, Wellington.


SCHEDULE.

Notice fixing Closing-hours of Shops in the Borough of Mosgiel.

WHEREAS a requisition in writing, signed by a majority of the occupiers of all the shops in the Borough of Mosgiel (not being one of the districts mentioned in section 3 of “The Shops and Offices Act, 1904”), has been forwarded to me, desiring that all shops, except in the following trades, in the borough shall be closed at 6 o’clock p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Fridays, at 8 o’clock p.m. on Wednesdays, at 9 o’clock p.m. on Saturdays, and at 1 o’clock p.m. on Thursdays: And whereas the Mosgiel Borough Council has certified that the signatures to such requisition represent a majority of the occupiers of all the shops within the borough:

Now, therefore, I, Richard John Seddon, the Minister of Labour, in pursuance of section 21 of the said Act, do hereby direct that from and after the 1st day of August, 1905, all shops, except in the following trades, in the Borough of Mosgiel shall be closed in accordance with such requisition.

Excepted Trades.—Tobacconists, hairdressers, chemists, fruiterers, confectioners, and refreshment-room keepers.

Varied Notice fixing Closing-hours of Shops in the Borough of Pahiatua.

WHEREAS by notice dated the 20th day of June, 1905, and gazetted on the 22nd day of June, 1905, James McGowan, acting for and on behalf of the Minister of Labour, in exercise of the powers in that behalf conferred by section 21 of “The Shops and Offices Act, 1904,” and acting in accordance with a requisition duly made and certified as required by that section, did direct that, from and after the 1st day of July, 1905, all shops in the Borough of Pahiatua (not being one of the districts mentioned in section 3 of the said Act) should be closed at 6 o’clock in the evening on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, and at 9 o’clock in the evening on Saturdays: And whereas by a like requisition duly made and certified as aforesaid the Minister of Labour has been requested to vary the said notice by limiting its action to all the shops except tobacconists’ and hairdressers’ shops:

Now, therefore, in compliance with the last-mentioned requisition, and in exercise of the powers conferred upon me by the above-mentioned section, I do hereby vary the said notice by directing that on and after the 1st day of August, 1905, its action shall be limited to all shops in the said borough except tobacconists’ and hairdressers’ shops.

Alterations to the Scale of Fares, Rates, and Charges in Force upon the New Zealand Government Railways.

IN pursuance of all powers and authorities enabling me under “The Government Railways Act, 1900,” I, Joseph George Ward, Minister for Railways, do hereby make the following alterations in the scale of fares, rates, and charges in force on the New Zealand Government railways open for traffic, such alterations to come into force on and after the 31st day of July, 1905:—

AUCKLAND SECTION.

Cancel—

When goods of Classes A, B, C, D, E, are consigned to Auckland, except such as are consigned to private sidings at that station, or to the Auckland Railway Wharf for shipment there, both the classified rates, Part III., and the local rates will be increased by 2s. 2d. per ton, except otherwise specified.

Insert—

When goods of Classes A, B, C, D, E, are consigned to Auckland, except such as are consigned to private sidings at that station, or to the Auckland Railway Wharf for shipment there, both the classified rates, Part III., and the local rates will be increased by 1s. 3d. per ton, except otherwise specified.

HURUNUI-BLUFF SECTION.

Cancel—

Goods for Christchurch and Invercargill.

When goods of Classes A, B, C, D, and E are consigned to Christchurch and Invercargill, the classified rates will be increased as follows:—

To Christchurch by .. .. 0 11 per ton.
To Invercargill by .. .. 1 4 ”

But such increase will not be made when goods are consigned to private sidings at those stations; or, in the case of Invercargill, when they are consigned to the Jetty.

Insert—

Goods for Christchurch and Invercargill.

When goods of Classes A, B, C, D, and E are consigned to Christchurch and Invercargill, the classified rates will be increased as follows:—

To Christchurch by .. .. 0 11 per ton.
To Invercargill by .. .. 1 2 ”

But such increase will not be made when goods are consigned to private sidings at those stations; or, in the case of Invercargill, when they are consigned to the Jetty.

Bluff and Invercargill.

Ships’ goods will be charged according to bill of lading, or by weight or measurement, at option of Department, provided that the charges shall not be computed on more than twice the actual weight of any package. Other goods by weight or measurement, as the Department directs.
