Special Books in Languages and Literature for Certificate and Civil Service Examinations, 1906 and 1907.

IN pursuance of regulations under “The Education Act, 1877,” and under “The Civil Service Examination Act, 1900,” notice is hereby given that at the examination for Class C and at the Civil Service Senior Examinations of January, 1906, and of January, 1907, candidates will not be examined in the history of any period of literature. The special books of which a knowledge will be required are as follows:—
ENGLISH.—1906: Carlyle, “Sartor Resartus”; Milton, “Samson Agonistes”; Holmes, “Professor at the Breakfast-table.” 1907: Eliot, “Romola”; Shakespeare, “King Lear” and “The Tempest”; Emerson, “Representative Men.”

Notice respecting proposed Borough of Levin, County of Horowhenua.

PURSUANT to section 175 of “The Municipal Corporations Act, 1900,” His Excellency the Governor directs it to be notified that a petition has been presented to him praying for the constitution of the area described in the Schedule hereto as a borough under the said Act, to be named the Borough of Levin.
All persons affected are hereby called upon to lodge any written objections to, or petitions against, the constitution of the said borough which they may desire to lodge within one month from the first publication of this notice; such objections or petitions to be addressed to the Colonial Secretary, Wellington.
SCHEDULE.
DESCRIPTION OF BOUNDARIES OF THE PROPOSED BOROUGH OF LEVIN.
ALL that area in the Wellington Land District bounded towards the north-east from the northernmost corner of Section No. 20, Block I., Waiopehu Survey District; and thence proceeding along the north-eastern boundaries of Sections Nos. 20, 23, and 25, to the easternmost corner of the last-mentioned section; thence by the northern side of the Kawi Road, forming the northern boundaries of Sections Nos. 27, 1, 11, 12, 15, a right line across the Wellington-Manawatu Railway-line, and Sections Nos. 33, 34, and 58, to the northernmost corner of Section No. 30; and thence by the north-eastern boundary-lines of the last-mentioned section and of Section No. 32 (Education Reserve) to the easternmost corner of the last-mentioned section; thence towards the south-east by the Arapaepae Road, forming the south-eastern boundary of Sections Nos. 32 and 33, and intersecting Subdivision 10, Horowhenua Block, to the south-western boundary-line of said Subdivision 10, Horowhenua Block: thence towards the south-west by the south-western boundary of the last-mentioned block to the Wellington-Manawatu Railway-line; thence by a right line across the said Wellington-Manawatu Railway-line to the easternmost corner of Section No. 13, Horowhenua Village Settlement: thence again towards the south-east by the south-eastern boundary-lines of Sections Nos. 13, 9, 8, 7, 6, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, and 30, all of Horowhenua Village Settlement, to the southernmost corner of the last-mentioned section: thence again towards the south-west by the south-western boundary-lines of Sections Nos. 30 and 51, and the production of the south-western boundary-line of the last-mentioned section across a road to the southernmost corner of Section No. 57, and by the south-western boundary-line of the last-mentioned section to its westernmost corner: thence towards the north-west by the north-western boundary-lines of Sections Nos. 57, 48, and 40 of the said Horowhenua Village Settlement, the same being the boundary of the State Farm, and the production of the north-western boundary-line of the last-mentioned section across the Horowhenua Beach Road to the south-western boundary-line of Subdivision No. 10, Horowhenua Block: thence towards the south-west by the south-western boundary-line of the last-mentioned block to its westernmost corner: thence again towards the north-west by the north-western boundary-line of Subdivision No. 10, Horowhenua Block, and the north-western boundary-lines of Sections No. 22 and Reserve No. 21, the abutment of a road, and Section No. 20 to the place of commencement.

Notice fixing Closing-hours of Shops in the Borough of Stratford.
WHEREAS a requisition in writing signed by a majority of the owners of all the shops in the Borough of Stratford (not being one of the districts mentioned in section 3 of “The Shops and Offices Act, 1904”), has been forwarded to me, desiring that all shops in such borough shall be closed at 6 o’clock in the evening on four working-days of the week, and 9.30 p.m. on Saturdays, during the months of October, November, December, January, February, March, and April, and at 5.30 o’clock in the evening on four working-days of the week, and at 9 o’clock on Saturdays, during the months of May, June, July, August, and September; excepting during the week preceding Christmas Eve, when the hours of closing shall be left to the option of the tradespeople: And whereas the Stratford Borough Council has certified that the signatures to such requisition represent a majority of the occupiers of all the shops within the borough:
Now, therefore, I, Thomas Young Duncan, acting for and on behalf of the Minister of Labour, in pursuance of section 21 of the said Act, do hereby direct that from and after the 1st day of April, 1905, all shops in the Borough of Stratford shall be closed in accordance with such requisition.

WHEREAS a requisition in writing, signed by a majority of the occupiers of all the chemists’ shops in the Borough of Oamaru (not being one of the districts mentioned in section 3 of “The Shops and Offices Act, 1904”), has been forwarded to me, desiring that all such shops in the borough shall be closed at 8 o’clock in the evening on four working-days of the week, and at 9.30 o’clock in the evening of Saturdays: And whereas the Oamaru Borough Council has certified that the signatures to such requisition represent a majority of the occupiers of all the chemists’ shops within the borough:
Now, therefore, I, Charles Houghton Mills, acting for and on behalf of the Minister of Labour, in pursuance of section 21 of the said Act, do hereby direct that from and after the 1st day of April, 1905, all the chemists’ shops in the Borough of Oamaru shall be closed in accordance with such requisition.
