1, discipline; 2, duties. The special duties of quartermaster-sergeants are very comprehensive, comprising a general knowledge of transport, rations and forage, cooking, pitching and striking tents and marquees, sanitary arrangements, water-supply, correspondence, system of keeping accounts of money and stores, transport by railway and sea.
Qualification, &c.
The maximum marks obtainable in each subject will be 100, and the minimum number of marks required to pass will be—For corporal, forty in each subject, and an average of fifty in the whole; for sergeant, forty in each subject, and an average of sixty in the whole.
Failure in any one subject means failure in the whole examination.
BOOKS RECOMMENDED.
The books recommended for officers are, in as far as they are applicable, also recommended for non-commissioned officers.

Chairman of Land Commission appointed.

WHEREAS by Warrant issued under my hand and the Public Seal of the Colony on the twenty-seventh day of January, one thousand nine hundred and five, certain persons named therein were appointed a Commission for the purpose of making inquiry into certain questions affecting Crown lands, and Walter Scott Reid was appointed to be Chairman of the Commission:
And whereas the said Walter Scott Reid has tendered his resignation as Chairman and member of the said Commission, and the resignation has been accepted, and it therefore becomes necessary to appoint a Chairman in his place:
Now, therefore, I, William Lee, Baron Plunket, the Governor of the Colony of New Zealand, acting by and with the advice and consent of the Executive Council of the said colony, and in pursuance of the powers conferred by “The Commissioners Act, 1903,” and of all other powers and authorities enabling me in that behalf, do hereby appoint

who is at present a member of the said Commission, to be Chairman thereof.

Warrant authorising the Minister for Public Works to construct a Bridge over the Taramakau River, near the Borough of Kumara, and apportioning the Cost thereof.
PLUNKET, Governor.
WHEREAS under the provisions of section one hundred and thirteen of “The Public Works Act, 1894,”
as amended by section eleven of “The Public Works Acts Amendment Act, 1900,” the Minister for Public Works has made application to the Governor to authorise the construction of the bridge mentioned in the Schedule hereto (hereinafter referred to as “the said bridge”), and to apportion the cost of constructing the said bridge between the said Minister on behalf of His Majesty the King, the Council of the County of Grey, the Council of the County of Westland, and the Council of the Borough of Kumara:
And whereas by section one hundred and thirteen aforesaid it is further provided that the Governor (with the view of determining whether or not the work should be done or what proportion, if any, of the cost of the same should fairly be borne by any local authority) may direct any person to be a Commissioner to inquire and report to him on the matter:
And whereas a Commissioner was appointed and inquiry duly held:
And whereas such Commissioner did report to the Governor after due inquiry his opinion thereon:
And whereas the Governor is of opinion that the work should be done, and that the cost thereof should be borne by the said Minister on behalf of His Majesty the King and the respective local authorities hereinafter mentioned in the several proportions hereinafter stated:
Now, therefore, I, William Lee, Baron Plunket, Governor of the Colony of New Zealand, in pursuance and in exercise of the powers and authorities vested in me by the hereinbefore-mentioned Acts, and of every other power and authority enabling me in that behalf, do hereby authorise the Minister for Public Works to construct the said bridge; and I do hereby declare that the cost of constructing the said bridge shall be borne as follows: namely, one-half of the cost shall be borne by the Minister for Public Works, one-fourth by the Council of the County of Grey, one-sixth by the Council of the Borough of Kumara, and one-twelfth by the Council of the County of Westland.
SCHEDULE.
The bridge over the Taramakau River, near the Borough of Kumara, known as the Taramakau Bridge.
As witness the hand of His Excellency the Governor, this twenty-sixth day of December, one thousand nine hundred and four.

Rural Lands in the Southland Land District open for Selection on Lease in Perpetuity.
PLUNKET, Governor.
IN pursuance and exercise of the powers and authorities conferred upon me by section one hundred and thirty-six of “The Land Act, 1892,” and section two of “The Bush and Swamp Crown Lands Settlement Act, 1903,” I, William Lee, Baron Plunket, the Governor of the Colony of New Zealand, do hereby declare and provide as follows, that is to say:—

The rural lands enumerated in the Schedule hereto are hereby set apart for disposal by way of selection on and after the fifth day of April, one thousand nine hundred and five, at the respective prices specified in the said Schedule.

The said lands may be selected on lease in perpetuity only, as provided by section one hundred and twenty-one of “The Land Act, 1892,” as they contain, or are supposed to contain, metal, mineral, or valuable stone, and shall not be purchased for cash.

For the purposes of “The Bush and Swamp Crown Lands Settlement Act, 1903,” the lands enumerated in the said Schedule hereto shall be deemed to be “light-bush land.”

No general rate shall be levied or collected by any local authority from the said lands for the period of three years from the date from which such lands are disposed of, and no local authority shall have power to levy or collect any such rate from such lands during such period.

After the first half-year’s rent has been paid by the selector the further instalments of rent payable by him for a period of three years shall not be demanded: provided that if at any time during the first five years of his occupancy the selector disposes of his interest in the land the rent so conceded shall be paid by him in full, and thereupon the Land Board may remit such instalments of rent payable by the incoming tenant, not exceeding in the aggregate the amount of rent previously conceded to the selector, as the Board shall think fit.
