Practical Fitness to Command.

1. Map-reading.
   Setting a map.
   Finding observer’s position in the field on a small-scale map.
   Facility in reading maps and in identifying points, both distant and near.
   Estimating distances on a map, direct and by road. (Map-reading to be tested indoors as well as in the field.)

2. Showing with coloured pencils on a map (not less than 1 in. to a mile) the dispositions of a force consisting of one or two battalions, one battery (or portion of one), and one or two squadrons, in compliance with the conditions of a tactical problem. (The time allowed for making the dispositions should not exceed one hour. In case of any doubt with regard to the solution of a problem, the officer should be required to explain his dispositions to the Board.) The purpose of this paper is to test an officer in the details of the proper distribution of troops.
   } Infantry Training.

3. Writing the orders to be issued to commanders of units of the force disposed as is specified in 2. (The time allotted for the preparation of the orders should not exceed one hour.)
   } Combined Training.
   } Manual of Field Sketching and Reconnaissance.

4. Handling in a tactical operation in the field a regiment of mounted rifles, a battalion of infantry, or a battery of field artillery, at the option of the candidate.
   Carrying out changes of position and formation to meet surprise situations.
