  2. Field engineering—
    The Board will select a position and set a scheme involving problems in
    elementary field engineering, such as the preparation of a position for defence,
    including arrangements for working-parties and execution of work, types
    of trenches, defence of localities, construction of obstacles, &c.
    The time allowed and the stores available will be stated by the Board.
    Candidates will be required to draw rough sketches and make notes on
    the works proposed, and hand them to the Board, who may question
    candidates as to their solution. The tendency to reproduce details from
    the text-books will be discouraged, and candidates must apply their general
    knowledge of the principles of field fortification to local conditions.
