PAPAKURA ROAD DISTRICT.
Result of Poll.
Proposal to raise a special loan under “The Local Bodies’ Loans Act, 1901,” upon which a poll will be taken upon the 16th day of July, 1904:—
The Papakura Road Board hereby give notice that they propose to borrow from the Government, under the provisions of “The Local Bodies’ Loans Act, 1901,” and its amendments, the sum of £400, for a term of forty-one years, at 4 per cent., for the metalling of roads as allocated hereunder: For the Brookby Road — From the western boundary of P. Aickin’s to Brookby Church, £140; between Brookby Church and Mrs. A. Oliver’s far gate, £160; from Brookby Church towards Wairoa, £30; Brookby Creamery New Road, £70. Interest and sinking fund for the same to be met and secured by an annually recurring special rate of ½d. in the pound on the unimproved rateable value of the following properties, all situated in the Papakura Road District, to be called the No. 1 Special-rating Division—viz., Sections 27, 47, 41, 48, 49, 50, 66, and 79, Parish of Wairoa; 27, 28, 39, 40, 41, 48, 50, 51, 52, 56, 67, and 68, Parish of Maraetai; 26, 27, 55/5, 65, 80, 134, 135, 136, 164, 189, 190, Parish of Pakuranga.
For the above proposal, 20; against the above proposal, 2. I therefore declare the poll carried.

CHINA.
GULF OF PECHILI — PAGODA ISLANDS — UNCHARTED ROCK.—Commander H. Osterhaus, U.S. Navy, commanding the U.S.S. “Cincinnati,” furnishes the following information regarding an uncharted rock upon which the steamer “Unison” stranded on the morning of 15th August, 1904. The ship was making passage from Shanghai to Newchwang, and with the intention of avoiding the sphere of war operations Captain Gunderson, the master, took a more southerly route near the Pagoda Islands and struck an uncharted rock, with 2 fathoms over it at low water, on the following bearings: North end of N. Hwangching tao N. 59° E. true (N.E. by E. ⅜ E. mag.); south end of Ta kin tao S. 60° E. true (S.E. by E. mag.); north point of Toki tao South true (S. ⅜ E. mag.). The bearings were furnished the commander by Commodore Sah, commanding the Chinese Northern Squadron.
Approx. position: Lat. 38° 19′ N., long. 120° 45′ E.
AUSTRALIA.
SOUTH COAST — HOBSON’S BAY — WILLIAMSTOWN BREAKWATER — COLOUR OF LIGHT.—Information dated 24th July, 1904, has been received from Captain F. C. T. Tudor, H.B.M.S. “Challenger,” that the colour of the fixed light exhibited from the extremity of the breakwater pier at Williamstown is green, not white.
Approx. position: Lat. 37° 52′ S., long. 144° 55′ E.
CHINA.
NORTH-EAST COAST — SHANTUNG PROMONTORY — STAUNTON ISLAND — ROCKS NEAR.—Information dated 21st and 27th July, 1904, has been received from Commander Ernest C. Hardy, H.B.M. surveying-vessel “Waterwitch,” of the existence of the following rocks in the neighbourhood of Staunton Island: A rock with a depth of 2 ft. over it in a position with the east point of Staunton Island bearing N. 4° W. true (north mag.), distant ¼ mile, and South-east Promontory Lighthouse N. 52° E. true (N.E. by E. mag.). A rocky patch with 4 fathoms of water over it lies S. 43° W. true (S.W. ⅛ W. w’ly mag.) 300 yards from this rock. A rock with a depth of 5 ft. over it in a position with North Channel Rock bearing S. 15° W. true (S. by W. ⅝ W. w’ly mag.), distant 500 yds., and Needle Peak N. 27° E. true (N.N.E. ⅜ E. mag.). A rock with a depth of 6 ft. over it in a position with South Channel Rock bearing S. 29° W. true (S.S.W. ⅞ W. w’ly mag.), distant 700 yds., and Staunton Island summit S. 28° E. true (S.S.E. ⅛ E. mag.). A rock which breaks heavily in a position with North Channel Rock S. 85° W. true (W. ⅛ S. mag.), distant 3¹⁄₁₀ miles, and Needle Peak N. 18° W. true (N. ¾ W. w’ly mag.).
LIAU-TING GULF — LIAO RIVER — TEMPORARY LIGHT-VESSEL — ENTRANCE BUOY.—The Japanese Government has given notice that on 21st August, 1904, a temporary light-vessel exhibiting 3 white lights placed vertically, and visible from a distance of 5 miles, has been moored in the place of the Liao light-vessel.
The light-vessel is a schooner, has three masts, and carries a red ball at the mainmast head.
The entrance buoy has been removed, and the inner and middle buoys will shortly be replaced.
Approximate position of light-vessel: Latitude 40° 35′ N., longitude 122° 00′ E.
Notice to Mariners No. 78 of 1904.

THE following Notice to Mariners, received from the Marine Board, Hobart, Tasmania, is published for general information.

Notice is hereby given that on and after Tuesday night, 25th instant, a light, unattended, will be exhibited off Long Bay, D’Entrecasteaux Channel, the particulars of which are as follow:—
Occulting, showing a steady white light with total eclipses at short intervals, the duration of the light to that of the eclipse being as three to one. The lantern is erected on piles. Depth of water, 18 ft. at low tide. Bearings, taken from seaward, S. 65° W. (magnetic) from the White House, Long Bay; distant half a mile.
The old pile beacon off Long Bay has been removed.

SIR,—With reference to my circular despatch of the 4th of December, 1903, I have the honour to transmit to you, for the information of your Government, copies of a notice issued by the Nobel Committee of the Norwegian Parliament with regard to the nomination of candidates for the Nobel Peace Prize of 1905.
I have to request that your Government will take such action with reference to this document as may seem calculated to make the conditions of the prize known to those bodies and persons who are qualified to nominate candidates.
It will be noted that names of candidates should be received by the Committee before the 1st of February next.

DET NORSKE STORTINGS NOBELKOMITÉ (NOBEL COMMITTEE OF THE NORWEGIAN PARLIAMENT).
Nobel Peace Prize.
ALL proposals of candidates for the Nobel Peace Prize, which is to be distributed 10th December, 1905, must, in order to be taken into consideration, be laid before the Nobel Committee of the Norwegian Parliament by a duly qualified person before the 1st February of the same year.
Any one of the following persons is held to be duly qualified: (a) Members of the Nobel Committee of the Norwegian Parliament; (b) members of Parliament and members of Government of the different States; (c) members of the Interparliamentary Council; (d) members of the Commission of the International Peace Bureau; (e) members of the Institute of International law; (f) university professors of political science and of law, of history, and of philosophy; and (g) persons who have received the Nobel Peace Prize.
The Nobel Prize may also be accorded to institutions or associations.
