This land is part of the Oamaru Block, lying to the southward of the Opotiki confiscation boundary-line, and situated from eleven to thirty miles from the sea-coast. The land is, generally speaking, very broken, the higher peaks and ridges ranging from 2,000 ft. to 3,000 ft. above sea-level. The soil is poor on the tops of these ridges and spurs, towai or black-birch being the prevailing timber. Along the valley of the Waioeka River, from the Opato Stream southwards, the slopes are easier, and the soil is of better quality, and, generally speaking, the country becomes less broken as the sources of the rivers are approached. With the exception of the ridges and spurs mentioned above, the block is fairly good pastoral country, the quality of the soil being good, though broken, and the block is well watered throughout.

Altitude, from 100 ft. to 2,400 ft. above sea-level; broken land, in many cases steep, covered with mixed forest consisting of tawa, rimu, rata, &c., with a little totara; the undergrowth is thick, with much supplejack in places; soil fairly good, except where towai or black-birch is found growing along tops of ridges; about 200 acres of first-class land in Block II., Waioeka Survey District; well watered. Access from the Waiotahi River Road, seven miles from Ohiwa Harbour and sixteen miles from Opotiki; from the Waioeka River Road; or by means of a 6 ft. road now being formed into the block, eight miles from Opotiki.

Altitude, from 100 ft. to 2,400 ft. above sea-level; very broken and steep in places; covered with mixed forest, chiefly tawa, with patches of towai or black-birch; well watered; soil fair for the most part, but poor on tops of ridges. Land is suitable for sheep if taken up in large areas. The block is situated from seven to twelve miles south of Opotiki, and can be approached either by the Waioeka River Road, the Otara River Road, or by road up the Tutaetoko Stream.
