Situate at the head of the Mataru Stream, at an altitude varying from 1,000 ft. to 1,350 ft. The land is hilly, but has more or less flat land, with swamp along banks of Mataru Stream. The formation is principally sandstone, the soil of fair quality, and well watered by permanent streams. The timber is comparatively heavy, and along the valleys may be found small quantities of rimu and kahikatea, probably of rather poor quality. (Litho. 152.)
