ten miles being a dray-road. The block, generally speaking, is very rough, but of fair quality of soil, and, owing to the difficulty of getting homestead-sites, it is only suitable for settlement in large areas. The valleys near the south end of the block are about 1,000 ft. below the ridges. Throughout the block the slopes are steep and the gullies generally gorgy; the formation is papa; the timber consists mostly of rata, tawa, hinau, with birch on the ridges, and the usual undergrowth. Access by the Taihore Road, distant from Strathmore about fifteen miles, portion of the distance being formed as a dray-road, crossing the Mangaehu Stream at the wire bridge, thence by Puniwhakau Road, partly formed as a bridle-track. Broken forest country, with long spurs and slopes from 100 ft. to 1,200 ft. above sea-level; heads of streams broken by gutters. The timber comprises rimu, rata, tawa, towai, pukatea, hinau, kahikatea, and usual undergrowth; there is birch on some of the ridges. Access by Kaipikari Road. About six miles from Urenui Township. All pastoral country, more or less broken; heavily timbered with tawa, rata, rimu, towai, and dense undergrowth; the soil is generally poor, resting upon a formation principally of papa, with shell-rock at intervals, and outcrops of sandstone. Streams are numerous, but run in deep gorges. Birch will be found on several of the spurs. The hills rise from 700 ft. to 1,200 ft. above the streams. Distance from Waitotara, from forty-seven to fifty miles via the Waitotara Valley Road, which has been opened for dray traffic to within about five miles of the Koane Road running through the block. Access may also be obtained from Eltham via the Rawhitiroa Road, distance from thirty-eight to forty-four and a quarter miles; eleven miles of this road have been metalled, another nine miles opened for dray traffic, the remainder has been opened as a bridle-road to its junction with the Waitotara Valley Road. All rough pastoral country, more or less broken by gullies, with occasional flats near the streams. The soil is good and well watered, resting upon a formation of papa. The land is wholly covered with bush, consisting of rata, rimu, tawa, towai, and the usual undergrowth. The ridges rise from 600 ft. to 800 ft. above level of main streams. The northern portion of the block will be approached from Urenui by way of the Mokau and Uruti Roads, they having been opened for dray traffic to the junction of the Uruti Road with the Moki Road, portions of the Mokau Road being metalled. The Uruti Road has been formed for some distance towards the block, which is distant from Urenui about sixteen miles and a quarter. The southern portion of the block is accessible via Okoke bridle-road, distant from Urenui about sixteen miles. (Litho. 133.)

All pastoral country, more or less broken; soil varies from fair to good; well watered; lying upon a formation principally of papa, with a little sandstone and a smaller quantity of limestone; shell rock also may be found in the block. The land is densely timbered with tawa, rata, rimu, tawhero, miro, matai, and rewarewa. Access will be from Eltham Railway-station, distant from thirty-two to thirty-six miles via the Rawhitiroa Road, twenty miles of which has been opened as a dray-road, eleven miles being metalled; the remainder of the road is formed as a bridle-track to near the junction of the Waitotara Valley Road, the latter having been opened for dray traffic to within about eight miles of the block. The altitude varies from 1,500 ft. to 1,800 ft. above sea-level. (Litho. 128.)

Mostly rough, broken country, ridges rising from 500 ft. to 600 ft. above the valleys; papa formation, and well watered. The land is wholly covered with forest, consisting of rata, rimu, tawa, towai, and the usual undergrowth. There is an old Native clearing in Section 4, on the Maikaikatea Stream. The access to the land will be by the Kaka or Uruti Roads, though the Okoke Road may also be used as a means of access. Distance from Urenui, from sixteen to nineteen miles. (Litho. 139.)

All forest country, more or less broken, with occasional small flats along Tongaporutu River frontage and Mangatoro Stream. The land is well watered, the soil varying from poor to good, resting upon a formation of sandstone and papa. Section 1, Block V., Waro, contains a considerable quantity of flat land on a plateau about 900 ft. above sea-level. The altitude of the sections varies from nearly sea-level to about 1,100 ft. The timber comprises tawa, rata, rimu, hinau, light woods, and a great quantity of birch on the spurs. Portions of the block are fairly accessible by the Ohau Road, which is formed as a pack-track. The Tongaporutu River is navigable for canoes for a considerable distance. The block lies from six to sixteen miles from the Tongaporutu Heads. (Litho. 142.)
