Notice to Mariners No. 7 of 1904.

NORTH ISLAND OF NEW ZEALAND : CAPE MARIA VAN DIEMEN.—WEATHER-FORECAST SIGNALS.

Marine Department,
Wellington, N.Z., 9th February, 1904.

NOTICE is hereby given that the Principal Keeper at Cape Maria van Diemen Lighthouse reports that the signal mast from which the weather-forecast signals referred to in Notice to Mariners No. 32 of 1899, issued by this Department on the 9th September, 1899, has been broken by a heavy gale, and that the weather signals could not be shown until it has been renewed.

Flag signals as to expected weather will, therefore, until further notice, only be hoisted from the lighthouse in reply to inquiry from passing vessels.

WM. HALL-JONES.

Notice to Mariners No. 8 of 1904.

Marine Department,
Wellington, 9th February, 1904.

THE following Notice to Mariners, received from the Portmaster, Brisbane, Queensland, is published for general information.

WM. HALL-JONES.

REPORTED ROCK, TORRES STRAITS.

Notice is hereby given that the master of the German steamer “Varzin” reports that, when on a voyage from Townsville to Macassar, his vessel (drawing 18 ft. 6 in.) struck on an unknown rock in the following approximate position: Lat. 10° 32′ S., long. 140° 55′ E., Booby Island bearing S. 8° W., distant 3¾ miles.

Masters of vessels when navigating this locality are therefore recommended to steer a course more to the southward, passing about 2 miles north of Booby Island.

Charts affected: Nos. 2375 and 447; “Australia Directory,” Vol. ii.

JOHN MACKAY, Portmaster.
Marine Department, Brisbane, 20th January, 1904.

Notice to Mariners No. 9 of 1904.

NEW CHANNEL OVER KAIPARA BAR.

Marine Department,
Wellington, N.Z., 9th February, 1904.

NOTICE is hereby given that the south part of the North Spit has for a considerable time been working to the southward, and a clear channel has now formed over the southern part of this spit.

A good mark for this channel is to keep the middle of a large grassy patch (400 ft. S.S.E. of the lighthouse, and the only one in the vicinity) on with the flagstaff bearing N. 52° E. magnetic, and steer in on this course until abreast of the outer end of the North Spit, when the course must be altered to pass clear of the North Spit beach, and midway between it and the Tory Shoal. The New Zealand Government’s s.s. “Hinemoa” steamed in and out of this channel, which is fully half a mile broad; the shoalest water obtained being 4½ fathoms at l.w.o.s.

The bottom is very ridgy, the soundings varying from 7 to 4¾ fathoms: there will consequently be a very heavy break in this channel during westerly gales. It is proposed to erect beacons for this channel, and to take away the leading-beacons at present marking the Galatea Channel, as the shoalest water on the bar in this channel is now over the part where these beacons are in line.

Charts, &c., affected: Admiralty chart 2614; “New Zealand Pilot,” 7th edition, Chap. vii., page 244; “New Zealand Almanac,” 1904, pages 184, 185, and 263.

WM. HALL-JONES.
