The above sections are situated at distances varying from five chains to one mile from Waikawa Township. They are sparsely covered with mixed bush of no commercial value, and well watered. The soil generally is clay, and ranks from fair to good. Sections 46, 47, and 56 are mossy and rough. The height above sea-level varies from 8 ft. to 300 ft. Litho. No. 347.

Section 13, Block XIV., is three miles and a half from the Gorge Road Railway-station. The land is level, mostly open, and of a wet and peaty nature. Litho. No. 351.

Rural Lands in the Taranaki Land District open for Selection on Lease in Perpetuity.

RANFURLY, Governor.

IN pursuance and exercise of the powers and authorities conferred upon me by section one hundred and thirty-six of “The Land Act, 1892,” and section two of “The Bush and Swamp Crown Lands Settlement Act, 1903,” I, Uchter John Mark, Earl of Ranfurly, the Governor of the Colony of New Zealand, do hereby declare and provide as follows, that is to say:—

  1. The rural lands enumerated in the Schedule hereto are hereby set apart for disposal by way of selection on and after the fifteenth day of March, one thousand nine hundred and four, at the respective prices specified in the said Schedule.

  2. The said lands may be selected on lease in perpetuity only, as provided by section one hundred and twenty-one of “The Land Act, 1892,” as they contain, or are supposed to contain, metal, mineral, or valuable stone, and shall not be purchased for cash.

  3. For the purposes of “The Bush and Swamp Crown Lands Settlement Act, 1903,” the lands enumerated in the said Schedule hereto shall be deemed to be “heavy-bush land.”

  4. No general rate shall be levied or collected by any local authority from the said lands for the period of four years from the date from which such lands are disposed of, and no local authority shall have power to levy or collect any such rate from such lands during such period.

  5. After the first half-year’s rent has been paid by the selector the further instalments of rent payable by him for a period of four years shall not be demanded; provided that if at any time during the first five years of his occupancy the selector disposes of his interest in the land the rent so conceded shall be paid by him in full, and thereupon the Land Board may remit such instalments of rent payable by the incoming tenant, not exceeding in the aggregate the amount of rent previously conceded to the selector, as the Board shall think fit.

Situate on Rimu, Prentice, and Hapurua Roads, distant from Ongarue twenty-four to thirty miles; access by good unmetalled dray-road for twenty-two miles and a half, then by bridle-road as far as Waitawhena Stream, and the remainder by surveyed road only. The sections comprise slopes and spurs, heavily covered with mixed forest, and birch on some of the highest parts. Good soil, on papa formation, and well watered by permanent streams. Elevation, 600 ft. to 1,500 ft. above sea-level. (Litho. 155.)

Situate on Turoto Road; access from Ongarue, distant thirty-one miles and a half, by a good unmetalled dray-road for twenty-five miles, remainder a surveyed road only. Hilly, undulating, and broken country; occasional flats in the valleys. The forest is heavy, consisting of tawa, rimu, tawhero, rata, hinau, &c. Soil good, on papa formation. Elevation, 500 ft. to 1,400 ft. above sea-level. (Litho. 155.)

Situate on Kakahi Road; access from Ongarue, distant about thirty-three miles, by a good unmetalled dray-road for twenty-five miles, remainder a surveyed road only. Rough and broken country, heavily covered with mixed forest; a few small flats along Kakahi Stream. Soil fairly good in valleys, light on tops of hills, on papa formation, and well watered by permanent streams. Elevation, 500 ft. to 1,600 ft. above sea-level. (Litho. 155.)
