Commissioner's Decisions under Tariff Acts.

Department of Trade and Customs,
Wellington, 3rd November, 1903.

IT is hereby notified for public information that the Hon. the Commissioner of Trade and Customs has decided to interpret the Customs and Excise Duties Acts in relation to the undermentioned articles as follows:—

NOTE.—“Not otherwise enumerated” appears as n.o.e.; “other kinds” as o.k.; “articles and materials suited only for, and to be used solely in, the fabrication of goods in the colony” as a. & m.s. Articles marked thus * are revised decisions.

Articles, and how classed. Rate of Duty.
03/1626. Air-compressor (claimed as an engineer’s machine-tool); as machinery n.o.e. 20 per cent.
*03/561. Blocks, plummer, couplings and collars for dairy factory; as manufactures n.o.e. of metal 20 per cent.
03/1582. “Cement, 2s. the barrel,” Tariff item 281: The barrel to be taken at 380 lb. weight; larger packages to be charged in proportion.
03/1480. “Depilatory” (compound of sulphide of calcium with free lime and excess of potash), for removing wool from sheepskins; as a. & m.s. Free.
*03/1373. Desiccated white and yolk of egg; as provisions n.o.e. 20 per cent.
*03/1373. Egg, liquid, yolk and white; as provisions n.o.e. 20 per cent.
03/1546. Engines and boilers, steam, must be “specially imported” for mining or gold-saving purposes or processes, or dairying, to get the benefit of the 5-per-cent. rate.
03/1567. Engine, gas or oil, on wheels; as gas-engines and oil-engines Free.
03/1600. Engine for steam-jet exhauster, used in gasworks; duty to be charged on the engine if separate as steam-engines 20 per cent.
02/1232. Fuel-economiser, Green’s patent; as machinery n.o.e. 20 per cent.
03/1538. “Listerine,” an antiseptic preparation; as druggists’ sundries n.o.e. 15 per cent.
03/1569. Malt extract, Pabst’s, a concentrated liquid extract of malt and hops; as beer of all sorts 2s. the gal.
*03/561. Overhead gear, including plummer-blocks, couplings and collars, for connecting engines with machinery, for whatever purpose the machinery may be used; as manufactures n.o.e. of metal 20 per cent.
*03/1583. Steamer in sections: Decision in C.O. 725 is cancelled; former decision on page 94 of Decision-book is to remain unaltered.
03/1211. “Thermit,” and ignition-powder for same, for welding tram-rails; as n.o.e. Free.
03/1601. Thread, linen, Mechlinberg, and Harris; as sewing-threads Free.
03/1381. Zinc-oxide B.P., in bulk; as paints and colours n.o.e. Free.

PURSUANT to the provisions of an Act of the General Assembly of New Zealand passed in the forty-fourth year of the reign of Her late Majesty Queen Victoria, and intituled “The Marriage Act, 1880,” the following name of an Officiating Minister within the meaning of the said Act is published for general information:—

Ascertainment of Names of Beneficial Owners of Part of Motiti B Block.

NOTICE is hereby given that, at a sitting of the Court to be held at Tauranga on Friday, the 20th day of November, 1903, further inquiry will be held, under the provisions of section 14 of “The Native Land Claims Adjustment and Laws Amendment Act, 1901,” to ascertain who were the 187 Natives whose names were decided upon at a meeting of the Patuwai Tribe held at Tauranga in February, 1886, as the beneficial owners of the northern portion of Motiti B Block. All persons interested are hereby notified to attend at the time and place aforesaid.

Meeting of Maniapoto-Tuwharetoa District Maori Land Council at Otorohanga. — “The Maori Lands Administration Act, 1900,” and its Amendments.

A MEETING of the above-mentioned Council will be held at Otorohanga on Tuesday, the 24th November, 1903, at 2 o’clock in the afternoon, to deal with objections to the Otorohanga Township plan that have been lodged with the President of the Council; also to deal with applications by beneficial owners for reserves of portions of the said township for their use and occupation, and any other business that may be lawfully brought before the Council.
