Wellington, 22nd September, 1903.

THE following Notices to Mariners, received from the Hydrographic Office, Washington, D.C., United States of America, are published for general information.

San Francisco Bay Entrance.—Bonita Point Light-station.—Fog Signal to be moved.—On or about the 25th August, 1903, the fog signal at this station, located on the westernmost extremity of Bonita Point, sea-coast of California, and on the northern side of the entrance to San Francisco Bay, will be moved to and established in the structure recently erected on the extreme end of Bonito Point, 335 ft. S., 79° W. true (S.W. by W. ⅔ W. W’ly mag.) from its present position, and 65 ft. N., 87° W. true (W.S.W. ¾ W. mag.) from the lighthouse. The new structure is 13 ft. lower than the lighthouse and 90 ft. above the water.

The structure is of brick, whitewashed, with red roof and a whitewashed brick chimney in rear of the lighthouse.

No change will be made in the charisteristic of the fog signal.

(1733) CALIFORNIA.

Humboldt Bay.—Increased Depth over Bar.—Through the courtesy of the Chief of Engineers, U.S. Army, a copy of a recent survey of the entrance to Humboldt Bay has been received. The survey shows a channel 31 ft. deep at mean low water and 250 ft. in width over the bar, and this channel depth exceeds by about 3 ft. that shown by a previous survey of 1899, made just after the jetties had been completed. The middle of the narrowest part of the channel is about 250 ft. north-east of the line indicated by the Humboldt Bay range beacon lights, and is about ⁸⁄₁₀ mile distant from the front range beacon.

The line marked by the range beacon lights on the South Jetty passes over the point of shoal on the south side of the channel, carrying a depth of 29 ft.

To carry best water, vessels entering should pass about 250 ft. north-eastward of the line indicated by the range beacons until abreast the outer ends of the jetties, when the line marked by the range beacons should be followed.
