REFERRING to Notice to Mariners No.1 of 1901, issued by this Department on the 4th January, 1901, the following notice, received from the Marine Board of Victoria, is published for general information.

VICTORIA.—PORT PHILLIP HEADS.—STEAM PILOTAGE SYSTEM.

REFERRING to Notice to Mariners dated the 23rd November, 1900, mariners are hereby notified that the temporary use of a schooner on the cruising-station to relieve the pilot steamship has been discontinued, and that the pilot service at Port Phillip Heads is now conducted at all times by means of a steamship.

REFERRING to Notice to Mariners No. 7 of 1903, issued by this Department on the 26th January last, the following notice, received from the Department of Ports and Harbours, Melbourne, Victoria, is published for general information.

VICTORIA.—GAS BEACON.—OBSERVATORY POINT, PORT PHILLIP.

REFERRING to General Notice to Mariners, Victoria, dated the 24th September, 1901, and to subsequent notices regarding the West Channel of Port Phillip, mariners and others are hereby notified that on or after the 1st October, 1903, a fixed white light, elevated about 55 ft. above sea-level and visible seven miles, will be exhibited from a beacon to be erected on the shore at Observatory Point, near the quarantine western boundary. Such light will illuminate an arc of 20 degrees between the bearings from seaward of S. 4° W. and S. 24° W., and, when kept in line with No. 2 gas beacon (Pope’s Eye) bearing S. 18½° W., will lead through the West Channel between the buoys southward of No. 12 gas buoy.

Notice is also hereby given that, as the westernmost limit of Observatory Point light will cut clear of the south-western end of the Royal George Shoal, No. 1 gas buoy thereat will be removed, and replaced by an ordinary middle ground buoy simultaneously with the establishment of such new light.

THE following Notice to Mariners, received from the Chief Harbourmaster, Fremantle, Western Australia, is published for general information.

WESTERN AUSTRALIA—WEST COAST.

THE Government of Western Australia desire to give notice that a 1st order dioptric double-flashing light is in course of erection about one mile east-south-east of Cape Naturaliste (Geographe Bay), in lat. 33° 32′ south, long. 115° 2′ east. The light will be white, lightning double flash, and will be displayed from a stone tower of a natural grey colour; the height of focal plane above high water being 404 ft.

Charts affected: 1034, Cape Naturaliste to King George Sound; 1033, Champion Bay to Cape Naturaliste.

OTAGO HARBOUR—NORTH CHANNEL.

THE Otago Harbour Board has notified that masters of vessels entering and leaving Otago Harbour are warned to work the North Channel only.

Licensing of Vehicles By-law made by the Weber County Council.

IT is hereby notified, in accordance with section 311 of “The Counties Act, 1886,” that so much of the by-law made by the Weber County Council, and sealed on the 31st day of August, 1903, as appoints the sums to be paid to the county funds for the licensing of vehicles has this day been approved by His Excellency the Governor.
