REPORT UNDER “THE NATIVE SCHOOL SITES ACT, 1880.”
WHEREAS certain Natives consented to appropriate for the site of a school land alleged to be owned by them at Kaingahoa Bay, in Block XV., Bay of Islands Survey District, hereunder more fully described, the title to which land has not been determined by the Native Land Court:
And whereas His Excellency the Governor appointed me, the undersigned, to ascertain the title of such Natives to the land, and their consent to such appropriation:
And whereas I have made the necessary inquiry:
Now I do hereby report as follows:—
That, having duly notified the date of my inquiry, as required by the aforementioned Act, I sat at the Courthouse, Russell, on Saturday, 25th April, 1903, for the purposes of such inquiry.
At such inquiry Pukepuke Ahitapu, Te Waaka Hakuene, Himi te Nana, Rewiri Ahitapu, Hare Warena, Turei Heke, and Hone Hau, all of Rawhiti, in the vicinity of the block, and Henare te Rangi, of Te Haumi, near Opua, attended, and claimed to own the land.
A copy of the plan (No. 6943) of the land proposed to be given for a school site was produced, and the provisions of the aforesaid Act were explained by me.
After due inquiry I found that the ownership of such land was limited to the chiefs before mentioned.
Each of such chiefs consented to the appropriation of such land for the site of the school under the provisions of the before-mentioned Act.
As witness my hand, at Russell, this 18th day of May, 1903.

SURVEY OF WELLINGTON HARBOUR.

Marine Department,
Wellington, N.Z., 5th June, 1903.

CAPTAIN W. P. Dawson, of H.M.S. “Penguin,” reports as follows:—
The recent survey of the fairway to Port Nicholson by H.M.S. “Penguin” has shown that the Falcon Shoals have extended and shoaled considerably. The least water on them now is 23 ft. at L.W.O.S. The general soundings over the shoals are uneven, varying from 23 ft. to 30 ft. The following are the positions of the shoalest soundings obtained:—
A patch with 24 ft. over it lies with the north extreme of Ward Island (as shown on Chart No. 1423, large corrections July, 1902, small corrections III. ’02) bearing N. 30° E., distant 9 cables.
From a 24 ft. patch, N. extreme of Ward Island bears N. 34° E., distant 10¾ cables.
From the 23 ft. patch (the least depth on the shoals), N. extreme of Ward Island bears N. 39° E., distant 11¾ cables.
From a 26 ft. patch (near the western edge of the shoals), N. extreme of Ward Island bears N. 44° E., distant 14½ cables.
From a detached 27 ft. patch, N. extreme of Ward Island bears N. 17° E., distant 11½ cables.
From a detached 18 ft. patch, N. extreme of Ward Island bears N. 2° E., distant 11½ cables.
Hope Shoal has a depth of 5 ft. over it at L.W.O.S.
Several patches of from 7 ft. to 10 ft. exist on the bank between Hope Shoal and Ward Island.
The bank S.E. of Ward Island has shoaled to 10 ft. in places.
A rock with 18 ft. over it exists about half a cable N.W. of Barrett Reef. From it the Signal-station (Chart No. 1423) bears N. 38° W., distant 6¾ cables.
The whole of Barrett Reef is charted half a cable too far north on Chart 1423. It is only one cable across at its widest part.
Luhrs Rock has 16 ft. on it, and lies with Signal-station bearing N. 34° E., distant 21½ cables.
A shoal patch with 16 ft. over it exists in Lyell Bay with the Signal-station bearing N. 46° E., distant 17 cables. Foul ground, with depths of from 21 ft. to 27 ft., extends for a distance of 1½ cables S.S.E. of this shoal, and there is a heavy break on it with a southerly swell. No sunken rock was found south of west ledge.
Steeple Rock is 30 ft. high.
Pencarrow Light is 322 ft. high. Its height is erroneously given as 420 ft. on Chart No. 2054, large corrections February, 1900, small corrections XII. ’99.
Deep-draught vessels entering Port Nicholson are recommended, after passing Steeple Rock buoy, to steer up with Gordon and Kau Points in transit (N. 34° W.) till north of the Falcon Shoals, then shape course for Somes Island.
The least water on this line will be 33 ft. at L.W.O.S. Gordon Point must not be approached within 2 cables.
Bearings are magnetic. Soundings given are reduced to L.W.O.S.

LEADING LIGHTS AND BEACONS AT KAWHIA HARBOUR.

Marine Department,
Wellington, N.Z., 10th June, 1903.

CAPTAIN BOLLONS, of the Government s.s. “Hinemoa,” reports having erected leading beacons for Kawhia Harbour. The first beacon is situated on the S.W. extreme of Te Motu, and is 35 ft. high, from which a white light is to be exhibited at an elevation of 13 ft. above high water. The rear beacon, situated on the rising ground behind Okura Bay, is 26 ft. high, and a white light is to be exhibited on it at an elevation of 60 ft. above high water. The beacons are one mile and three-quarters apart, and can be clearly seen two miles seaward of the bar. They bear when in line S. 62° E. (magnetic) from the bar, and lead in through the middle of the channel in 12 ft. of water at L.W.O.S. When on the bar the foot of the rear beacon touches the top of the front one, thus making a continuous straight line, and the beacons, being far apart, form a quick transit. The lights, which are ships’ masthead-lights, should be visible on a clear dark night at a distance of at least two miles outside the bar.
The above-mentioned lights are to be shown on and after 1st July, 1903, whenever vessels are expected or are leaving at night.
The beacon which formerly stood on the rock off the South Head has been taken away, as it is now of no use, and would be misleading, owing to the channel having changed.
Charts, &c., affected: Admiralty charts Nos. 2524 and 2535; “New Zealand Pilot,” 7th ed., Chap. vii., page 261.
