dated 24th August, 1899, be revoked, and the following regulations substituted in lieu thereof :—

SCHEDULE.

  1. Applicants for enlistment in the Permanent Force must send in an application on proper form to the Officer Commanding Permanent Force, Wellington, together with a medical-inspection form, duly filled in and certified to by a medical practitioner; also two certificates as to character, one of which must be from a Justice of the Peace or a clergyman. If the applicant is a Volunteer, one of the character-certificates must be from the officer commanding the corps in which he is serving.

  2. A candidate who has been selected for enlistment must report himself for attestation at the Alexandra Military Depot, Wellington, within fourteen days from the date specified in the notice which will be sent to him. Should he fail to do so he will be held to have forfeited the appointment, excepting in case of certified sickness. If fit for service within three months he becomes eligible for the first subsequent vacancy.

  3. The standard for recruits in the Permanent Force is as follows :—

No. 1 Company, Artillery—
Gunners: Height, 5ft. 9 in. minimum ; chest, 36 in. full inspiration.
Drivers: Height, from 5 ft. 5 in. to 5 ft. 8 in.; chest, 35 in. full inspiration.
No. 2 Company, Submarine-mining Engineers— Sappers: Height, 5 ft. 6 in. minimum; chest, 35 in. full inspiration.
Intending recruits must be willing to undergo vaccination, or revaccination if necessary.

  1. A recruit will be on probation for his first six months’ service, and during that period must pass an examination in drills, on the result of which his final acceptance for the service will depend. During this period of probation his pay will be at the rate of 4s. 6d. per day.

  2. A probationer gunner (or sapper), on being finally accepted for the service, will be rated as second-class gunner (or sapper), and will be paid at the rate of 5s. 6d. per day until he completes three years’ service, when his pay will be increased to 6s. per day, provided he is found by examination to be proficient in his duties.
    A probationer driver, on being finally accepted for the service as driver, will receive pay at the rate of 6s. per day until completion of three years’ service, when his pay will be increased to 6s. 6d. per day, conditionally on his keeping himself efficient.

  3. Second-class gunners and sappers will, as vacancies occur, be appointed first-class gunners and sappers respectively, subject to their passing a professional examination qualifying them as specialists, and will continue in these grades as long as they maintain their efficiency.
    All men employed at their trades will be included among specialists, conditionally on their passing an annual examination in drills.

The pay of first-class gunners will be at the rate of 6s. 6d. per day, and of first-class sappers at the rate of 7s. per day.

Revocation of Appointment of Bonding Warehouse.

CUSTOMS.—In exercise of the authority in me for this purpose vested, I, the Commissioner of Trade and Customs, do, by this order under my hand, revoke and annul the appointment of the undermentioned warehouse for the reception and security of goods entered to be warehoused without payment of duty upon the first entry thereof, namely,—

Port of Timaru.

WAITARA WEST ROAD BOARD.

Notice is hereby given that, at a poll taken at the Public Hall, Lepperton, on Monday, 19th January, 1903, on a proposal to raise a loan of £1,500, under “The Local Bodies’ Loans Act, 1901,” for expenditure on the Kelly Road, the following votes were recorded :— For the proposal, 20 votes; against the proposal, 3 votes. As the number of valid votes recorded in favour of the proposal exceed three-fifths of the total number of valid votes recorded at the poll, I declare the said proposal carried.

THE following special order, made by the Pokeno Road Board, is published in accordance with the provisions of “The Road Boards Act, 1882.”

POKENO ROAD DISTRICT.
BY-LAWS.

BY-LAWS of the body corporate the Inhabitants of the Pokeno Road District, made and enacted by and under special order of the Pokeno Road Board passed on the 6th day of December, 1902, and sealed with the common seal of the said Board on the 19th day of January, 1903, to come into force on being gazetted :— The undermentioned by-laws shall be in force within and shall apply to and affect the whole of the Pokeno Road District.

In pursuance of the powers vested in the said Pokeno Road Board by “The Road Boards Act, 1882,” and its amendments, and “The Public Works Act, 1894,” and its amendments, and any other statutory provisions the said Board thereunto enabling, the Pokeno Road Board doth hereby ordain as follows :—

  1. In these by-laws, except where inconsistent with or repugnant to the context,— “District” means the Pokeno Road District: “District road” means any road, street, or other highway under the care, control, or management of the Board: “District bridge” means any bridge under the care, control, or management of the Board: “Cattle” means and includes any horse, mare, gelding, colt, filly, and foal ; any bull, cow, ox, steer, heifer, and calf; any ram, ewe, wether, and lamb; any mule, ass, goat, boar, or sow.

  2. No person shall ride, drive, or lead any horse or other animal on, upon, or along any footway or footpath constructed for foot-passengers only within the district.

  3. No person shall wheel any barrow or truck, or use, drive, or conduct any velocipede, bicycle, tricycle, or other vehicle of any description on, upon, or along any footway or footpath constructed for foot-passengers only within the district.

  4. No person shall leave or allow to remain upon any district road or any district bridge, or upon or over any channel or surface drain in any district road, any logs, timber, bricks, stone, building or other materials, so that such logs, timber, bricks, stone, building or other materials shall be a source of danger, or shall delay, impede, or obstruct the passage of any person, horse, or vehicle over such district road.

  5. No person shall, upon any district road, except at places which shall have been appointed by the Board for the purpose, load any vehicle with or place upon or attach to any vehicle any timber or logs.
