sale plan are uncleared and unformed. The whole area comprises generally high hilly country with sharp ridges intersected by deep gullies, all covered with forest and scrub. There are some small flats and easy slopes in places. The forest consists generally of hinau, tawa, miro, tawhai, tawhero, rewarewa, rimu, and rata, and the undergrowth, which is generally thick, of kowai, manuka, makomako, houhou, rangiora, &c., and a thick growth of supplejacks in the gullies. The soil varies from fair to good, being shallower on the sharp ridges and fairly deep on the flatter tops and in the bottoms. The formation is papa and sandstone, and occasionally shell rock. The land is fairly well watered by numerous small springs and streams. The elevation ranges from about 300 ft. to 2,400 ft. above sea-level. When the bush has been felled and burned, and the land sown down in English grasses, it should form good healthy sheep country, which is a characteristic of the district.

Declaring Roads through Lands in Lyndon No. 2 Settlement to be closed.

RANFURLY, Governor.

WHEREAS a report has been received from the Surveyor-General, from which it appears that the roads described in the Schedule hereto are unformed and unused, and that they intersect land acquired under “The Land for Settlements Consolidation Act, 1900,” and are not suitable for the subdivision of such land: Now, therefore, I, Uchter John Mark, Earl of Ranfurly, the Governor of the Colony of New Zealand, in pursuance and in exercise of section sixty-nine of the said Act, and of all other powers and authorities in anywise enabling me in this behalf, do by this notice hereby close the roads hereinafter described, and I do hereby declare that they shall thereupon become subject to the said Act.

As the same are delineated upon the plan marked S.G. 19246, deposited in the Head Office of the Department of Lands and Survey, at Wellington, in the Wellington Land District, and thereon coloured green.

As witness the hand of His Excellency the Governor, this sixteenth day of September, in the year of our Lord one thousand nine hundred and two.

WHEREAS by the two-hundred-and-thirty-fifth section of “The Land Act, 1892,” it is enacted that the Governor may from time to time, either by general or particular description, and whether the same has been surveyed or not, reserve from sale temporarily, notwithstanding that the same may be then held under pastoral license, any Crown lands which in his opinion are required for any of the purposes in the said section mentioned:

Now, therefore, I, Uchter John Mark, Earl of Ranfurly, the Governor of the Colony of New Zealand, in exercise and pursuance of the powers and authorities vested in me by the said Act, do hereby temporarily reserve from sale the lands in the Land District of Canterbury described in the Schedule hereunder written, for the purposes in the said Schedule specified at the end of the descriptions of the lands so intended to be temporarily reserved.

ALL that area in the Canterbury Land District, containing by admeasurement 32 acres, more or less, numbered 3571 (in red), situated in Block XIII., Pareora Survey District, being portion of the Pareora River bed north of Sections Nos. 23907, 16165, 26699, and 23860: as the same is delineated on the plan marked S.G. 26489, deposited in the Head Office, Department of Lands and Survey, at Wellington, in the Land District of Wellington, and coloured thereon red. For improvement and protection of river.

All that area in the Canterbury Land District, containing by admeasurement 17 acres, more or less, numbered 3572 (in red), situated in Block XIII., Pareora Survey District, being portion of the Pareora River bed south of Section No. 33829: as the same is delineated on the plan marked S.G. 26489, deposited in the Head Office, Department of Lands and Survey, at Wellington, in the Land District of Wellington, and coloured thereon red.
