Notice to Mariners No. 26 of 1902.

THE following Notices to Mariners, received from the Board of Trade, London, are published for general information.

WM. HALL-JONES.

AFRICA.

East Coast.

BEIRA HARB.—Four buoys, marked A, B, C, and D, to indicate the passage through the Rambler Chan., have been moored approx. in the following positions: A buoy (black) with Ponta Jea lt. N.1° E., 5⁴⁄₁₀ miles; Massique Pt., N.W. B buoy (red) with Ponta Jea lt. N.6° E., 3⁷⁄₁₀ miles; Massique Pt., N.57° W. C buoy (red) with Ponta Jea lt. N.24° E., 2⁶⁄₁₀ miles; Massique Pt., N.71° W. D buoy (red) with Ponta Jea lt. N.83° E., 1⁷⁄₁₀ miles; Chiveve Pt., N.37° E. This chan. should not be used by vessels drawing more than 14ft. Approx. position, 19° 54′ S., 34° 50′ E. March.

With reference to Admiralty Notice to Mariners No. 914 of 1901: A misprint has occurred in the description of the positions of A and B buoys; the correct bearing of Massique Pt. from A buoy being N.45° W.; and from B buoy N.57° W. The notice should accordingly read thus: A buoy (black) is situated with Ponta Jea lt. N.1° E., 5⁴⁄₁₀ miles; Massique Pt., N.45° W. B buoy (red) is situated with Ponta Jea lt. N.6° E., 3⁷⁄₁₀ miles; Massique Pt., N.57° W. The remaining part of the notice is correct. Approximate position, 19° 54′ S., 34° 50′ E. March.

DAR ES SALAAM.—Pilotage is now compulsory for all vessels of over 100 tons. If the time of a vessel’s arrival be prev. notified to the Harb. Office (Hafenamt Kommando der Flottille) the pilot will await her in the vicinity of the lt.-h. isl., Outer Makatumbe (6° 47′ S., 39° 20′ E.). Outgoing vessels must notify the time of their departure to the Harb. Office in due time to avoid delay in sailing. March.

Madagascar.

PORT RADAMA APPROACH.—A shoal carrying 16 ft. lies in approx. 14° 9½′ S., 47° 41½′ E. March.

BOMBETOKÉ BAY.—A fl. white lt. every 5 secs., dura. of fl. under ¹⁄₁₀ sec., is exh. from a metal lt.-h. 103ft. high, in approx. 15° 42³⁄₄′ S., 46° 13¹⁄₄′ E., on Katsépé Cliffs, with Ampangataha Rk. S.61° E., 7¼ cables, and Katsépé Tree, S.43° W. Feb.

PORT MAJUNGA.—A F. white lt., vis. from N.85° E., through N. and W., to S.25° W., elev. about 10 ft. above H.W., is exh. in approx. 15° 43³⁄₄′ S., 46° 19′ E., on the extr. of the wharf. March.

PRACEL BANK.—The following information has been received relative to islets and shoals on the Pracel Bank: Chesterfield Isl.—Depths of 5 fms. or less, in approx. 16° 19′ S., 43° 53¹⁄₄′ E., extend for nearly 2 miles to the S. of the isl., and over ½ mile to the N. and E. In passing to the S. of the isl., vessels should give it a berth of at least 2 miles. Fernande Shoal.—A depth of 3³⁄₄ fms. has been obtained in approx. 16° 31′ S., 43° 54³⁄₄′ E. Depths of less than 5 fms. extend for one mile to the N. and 2¹⁄₄ miles to the S.E. of this position. Flying Fish Bank.—A sounding of 8 fms. has been obtained in the vicinity of this bank in approx. 16° 30′ N., 44° 0½′ E. Dart Shoal.—This shoal uncovers in several places. A rk., which dries 3ft., lies in approx. 16° 38¹⁄₄′ S., 44° 6′ E., rocky ground extending ½ mile to the wrd. of it. This bank rarely breaks, and its proximity is not indic. by any change in the colour of the water. Mpanjaka Reef.—This reef has several heads carrying less than 6 ft., but breaks rarely, except with a sea from the S.W. A rk. carrying 3 ft. lies in approx. 16° 53¹⁄₂′ S., 44° 6¹⁄₄′ E. Rks. extend 7 cables to the N.W. and 4 cables to the S.W. of this position. Kiakala or Porpoise Reef.—This reef has several heads which cover and uncover, the highest of which, in approx. 16° 55³⁄₄′ S., 44° 7³⁄₄′ E., dries 6 ft. This reef appears to be connected with Mpanjaka Reef by a bank of 6 fms. Jan.

TAMATAVE.—It is reported that tugs can now be obtained at this port. In sig. for a tug the pilot flag should be hoisted under the national flag. March.

Réunion.

CYCLONE SIGS.—The following sigs., indic. the probable approach and general track of cyclones in the vicinity of the isl., will be hoisted on the flagstaffs at St. Denis, St. Paul, St. Pierre, and also on the Vigie flagstaff, St. Denis:—

▽ Cyclone appears likely to pass at a considerable dist. △ nrd. of the isl.

△ Cyclone appears likely to pass a short dist. nrd. of ▽ the isl.

△ Cyclone appears likely to pass to the srd. of the isl., ○ travelling from the N.-erd. to the S.-wrd.

▽ Cyclone appears likely to pass to the srd. of the isl., ○ travelling from the N.-wrd. to the S.-erd.

▽ Cyclone appears likely to pass to the wrd. of the isl., ▽ travelling from the nrd. to the srd.

○ The cyclone appears likely to pass to the erd. of the △ isl.

The cyclone which had already passed in a nly. direction appears to have recurred, and is again approaching the isl., travelling from the N.-wrd. to the S.-erd.

These sigs. are to be taken as a general guide only, and are in no way intended to prevent mariners from using their own judgment as to the best method of avoiding the storm. March.

EASTERN ARCHIPELAGO, ETC.

Malacca Strait, &c.

SALANG OR JUNKSEYLON ISL.—The s.s. “Palamcotta” reports having grounded on a rocky patch, with 11 ft. least depth, in approx. 7° 45¹⁄₂′ N., 98° 18¹⁄₂′ E., with the N.E. extr. of Goh Keo Jai (Pagoda Isl.) N.85° W., about 2⁴⁄₁₀ cables. March.

Celebes.

PULO SALAYAR.—A rk., carrying less than 6 ft., lies in approx. 6° 12′ S., and 120° 27′ E., in the srn. entr. to Pasi chan. between pulo Pasi and pulo Salayar, S. coast of Celebes Isl., with the S. pt. of pulo Pasi S.83° W., 7½ cables, and W. extr. of Padang Pt. N.7° W. March.

CHINA SEA, ETC.

China.

HONGKONG.—On 1st Jan., 1902, the following new lts. were to be exh. in the Lye Mun Pass: A F. red lt., R. one mile, exh. from a concrete pillar surm. by staff and globe, on the 1½ fm. patch in approx. 22° 18′ N., 114° 14′ E., 7½ cables N.65° E. from Quarry Pt. 2. A F. red lt., R. one mile, exh. from a gibbet on the shore near Lye Mun Pt. March.

PACIFIC OCEAN.

New Guinea.

NEW BRITAIN.—MATUPI HARB.—Two leading-beacons are est. at the harb. to mark the fairway: The front beacon, a pyra. frame surm. by a triangle, pt. up, red and white vert., in approx. 4° 13¹⁄₂′ S., 152° 12′ E., on the shore 350 yds. N.59° E. from the W. pillar. The rear beacon, a triangle, pt. down, red and white vert., on the hillside, 340 yds. N.20° W. from the front beacon. The beacons in line N.20° W. lead into the harb. A red tripod is also est. on the S.E. pt. of the Matupi Isl. shoal, with the Wesleyan mission-house on the N.E. pt. of Matupi N.34° W., 730 yds. March.

Solomon Islands.

BIO ISL.—A shoal, carrying 2 fms., is reported to exist in approx. 10° 9′ S., 161° 40′ E., about one mile off the N.W. pt. of the isl. Also a bank, carrying about 10 fms., lies from two to three miles W.N.W. of the N. pt. of the isl. March.

Fiji Islands.

WAKAYA REEF.—A F. white lt. is intended to be exh. from a wooden structure about 70 ft. above H.W., in course of constr. in approx. 17° 41¹⁄₂′ S., 179° 5′ E., on the srn. extr. of the reef. Feb.

NORTH AMERICA.—WEST COAST.

Alaska.

LYNN CANAL.—The bell buoy marking Sherman Rk., in approx. 58° 51′ N., 135° 9¹⁄₂′ W., has been replaced by a red conical buoy moored in the same position. Oct.

On 1st March, 1902, a F. white lt., elev. 82 ft. above H.W., R. 14 miles, is to be exh. from a white square tower surm. a white house, in 58° 32³⁄₄′ N., 134° 54³⁄₄′ W., on Sentinel Isl., nrn. entr. to Favorite Chan. Also a fog-trumpet sounding blasts of 5 secs., separated by intervals of 25 secs., is to be est. near the lt.-h. March.

FREDERICK SOUND.—On 1st March, 1902, a F. white lt., elev. 68 ft. above H.W., R. 14 miles, is to be exh. from a square black tower surm. a white house, in 57°.16′ N., 133° 37¹⁄₂′ W., on the S.-ern. of the Five-Finger Isls., about 5¹⁄₂ miles N.49° W. from Cape Fanshaw. Also a fog-trumpet sounding blasts of 5 secs., separated by intervals of 25 secs., is to be est. at the lt.-h. March,
