Garrison Artillery.

Officers.—Gunnery terms; duties of gun group commander; gun-laying; drill of guns in use; knowledge of ammunition; ranging; depression range-finder; company drill; manual and firing exercises; guard-mounting.

N.C.O.s.—Gunnery terms; duties of gun captain; gun-laying; drill a squadron at guns in use; knowledge of ammunition; squad drill; manual and firing exercises; guard-mounting.

Mounted Infantry.

Officers and N.C.O.s.—General definitions; intervals and distances; recruit drill, mounted and dismounted; squad and company drill; guard-mounting; firing exercise.

Infantry.

Officers and N.C.O.s.—Definitions; general rules; recruit and squad drill; drill of sections in extended order; guard-mounting; company drill; firing exercise.

Cyclist Corps.

Officers and N.C.O.s.—Same as infantry, and, in addition, cyclist drill as laid down in manual.

Engineers.

Officers and N.O.C.s.—Same as infantry, and, in addition, some knowledge of manual of military engineering, section 3; hasty entrenchments; cordages and use of spars; elements of bridging.

  1. UNIFORM.

Officers and N.C.O.s attending the School of Instruction will appear in drill order, and will report themselves at 10 a.m. on the day fixed for commencement of the course.

  1. EXAMINATION.

A practical examination will be held before the Commandant of the Forces, or an officer deputed by him, at the conclusion of each course. There will also be a written examination, as follows:—

N.C.O.s will have the same number of papers as laid down for officers of their respective arm of the service, but the questions will be in accordance with the syllabus for N.C.O.s.

Officers and N.C.O.s who are successful will be judged to have passed the School of Instruction, and a notification of this fact will be published in General Orders. Parchment certificates will be given in accordance with the result of the above examination.

A pass in (a) and (b) will be deemed to be equivalent to having passed the examination prescribed for promotion to lieutenant in the arm in which the examination was passed, and for gazetted lieutenant a pass in (a), (b), and (c) for promotion to the rank of captain under the Volunteer Regulations, provided a vacancy for such promotion in the corps to which the officer belongs should occur within three years of date of passing.

B

  1. Standard of Qualifications.

For Pass.—A candidate will be required to obtain 0·5 in each subject. Sub-headings (1), (2), and (3) of subject (c) are recorded as a separate subject. Should a candidate, however, fail in any one subject under (c), he will be allowed to present himself for re-examination within six months in that subject alone, and if he pass he will be granted a certificate.

Special Mention.—Should the aggregate of marks obtained by a candidate amount to 0·75 he will be recorded as “Special mention,” and if it should amount to 0·8 in any subject, as “distinguished” in that subject, provided no re-examination has been necessary, and that no candidate will be recorded as “distinguished” in (b) unless he has been reported as a “good drill” by the Commandant of the School.

Officers who have passed in (a) and (b) will have p. placed after their names in the New Zealand Army List; those who have passed in (a), (b), and (c), p.s.; and if distinguished in (c), P.S.

  1. LEAVE OF ABSENCE.

Under special circumstances leave of absence may be granted to candidates if it does not interfere unduly with their instruction.

  1. SIGNALLING.

When found practicable, instruction in signalling will be given.

  1. DRILL TOWARDS CAPITATION.

Candidates who complete a course at the School of Instruction will be allowed to count six drills towards capitation.

  1. SYLLABUS OF COURSE OF INSTRUCTION.

(a.) REGIMENTAL DUTIES.

  1. Discipline.

Officers.—General instructions, saluting, arrest and confinement of offenders, summary and minor punishments, courts of inquiry and courts martial, general knowledge of manual and military law and Defence Act.

N.C.O.s.—General instructions, saluting, arrest and confinement of offenders.

  1. Duties.

Officers.—General duties of field officers, captains, subalterns, battery and company sergeant-majors, colour-sergeants, subalterns of the day, regimental orderly sergeant, regimental orderly corporals, battery and company orderly sergeant, battery and company orderly corporal, duty roster, guards and prisoners; stable duties and horse management for mounted corps.

N.C.O.s.—General duties of company sergeant-major, colour-sergeant, regimental orderly sergeant, regimental orderly corporal, company orderly sergeant, company orderly corporal, duty roster, guards and prisoners; stable duties and horse management for mounted corps.

  1. Interior Economy.

Officers.—Organization; command and precedence; officers; non-commissioned officers; members; Volunteer Regulations and Defence Act; correspondence; system of keeping books and returns; system of payment, &c.

N.C.O.s.—Organization; non-commissioned officers; members; Volunteer Regulations and Defence Act; correspondence; system of keeping books and returns; system of payment.

  1. Miscellaneous.

Officers.—Transport duties; knowledge of the methods of supplying troops with food, forage, ammunition, and stores; movements of troops by rail and sea; details of fitting saddlery and harness; details of fitting accoutrements in various orders of parade; care of arms, ammunition, and accoutrements; regulations for encampments; regulations for pitching and striking tents and marquees; camp duties; disposal of harness and saddlery in camp; precautions on rifle-ranges.

N.C.O.s.—Transport duties; knowledge, &c., of movements of troops by rail; details of fitting saddlery and harness; details of fitting accoutrements in various orders of parade; care of arms, ammunition, and accoutrements; regulations for encampments; regulations for pitching and striking tents and marquees; camp duties; precautions on rifle-ranges.

(b.) DRILLS.

GARRISON ARTILLERY CORPS.

  1. Drills.

Officers.—Company drill; manual and firing exercises; performing duties of G.G.C. of a group of B.L., R.M.L., and Q.F. guns; depression range-finding; duties of battery commander; manning a battery as for action and fire discipline; ranging at (a) stationary target, (b) moving target.
