Result of Poll for Proposed Loan, Borough of Hawera.

THE following notice, received from the Mayor of the Borough of Hawera, is published in accordance with the provisions of “The Municipal Corporations Act, 1900.”

I, CHARLES EDWIN MAJOR, Mayor of the Borough of Hawera, in the Colony of New Zealand, do hereby, pursuant to “The Municipal Corporations Act, 1900,” give you notice that on the 25th day of July, 1901, a poll of burgesses of the said Borough of Hawera was taken, under provisions of the said Act, and also under the provisions of “The Local Government Voting Reform Act, 1899,” and “The Regulation of Local Elections Act, 1876,” on a proposal of the Council of the said borough to borrow the sum of £12,500 by way of special loan for the purpose of general street improvements, paying off balance of existing loans, construction of 15 in. drain in High Street, construction of public baths, erection of fire-brigade station and purchase of suitable plant for fire-prevention purposes, and payment of interest on loan during progress of works, for the Borough of Hawera, under the provisions of the said Acts, a copy of which proposal is next hereinafter set out.

PROPOSAL to raise a Special Loan, upon which a Poll will be taken on the 25th Day of July, 1901.
- The sum proposed to be borrowed is £12,500, for the purposes set forth as follows:—
(a.) Metalling, forming, and general improvements to various streets within the Borough of Hawera, £5,364.
(b.) To pay off balance of streets loan, £3,000, and balance of office-building loan, £900, at present borrowed from Bank of New Zealand, and which falls due in October, 1901: £3,900.
(c.) To construct a 15 in. drain in High Street (Borough of Hawera), from Victoria Street to Cameron Street (south end of High Street), about 40 chains, and to drain streets leading into same, £817.
(d.) Constructing public baths within the Borough of Hawera, £1,000.
(e.) Erection of fire-brigade station within the Borough of Hawera, and purchase of suitable plant for fire-prevention purposes, £1,000.
(f.) For payment of interest on loan during progress of works as above set forth, £419. - The proposed security for and provisions for repayment of the loan: A special rate of ninepence (9d.) in the pound over all the rateable property within the Borough of Hawera, together with the rents accruing from Allotments 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and Part 7 of Subsection 7 of Section 19, in the Borough of Hawera.

And I also give you notice that the number of votes recorded upon the taking of the said poll for and against the said proposal were as follows:—
Number of voters on roll, 422; number of votes exercisable, 422: Number of votes for proposal, 144; number of votes against proposal, 65; informal votes, 4.

Declaration.
In the matter of a loan of £12,500 for general street improvements, paying off balance of existing loans, construction of 15 in. drain in High Street, construction of public baths, erection of fire-brigade station and purchases of plant for fire-prevention purposes, and payment of interest on loan during construction of works for the Borough of Hawera; and a proposal by the Hawera Borough Council to borrow the sum of £12,500 for such purposes under “The Municipal Corporations Act, 1900.”
I, Charles Edwin Major, of Princes Street, in the Borough of Hawera, in the Colony of New Zealand, Mayor of the said borough, do solemnly and sincerely declare as follows:—
- That all proceedings as required by the above-named Act to be taken towards obtaining the sanction of the burgesses of the said Borough of Hawera to a proposal of the Council of the said borough to raise the sum of £12,500 by way of special loan, under the provisions of the said Act, have been duly taken.
- That upon a poll of the said burgesses, taken on the said proposal on the 25th day of July, 1901, the said proposal was duly carried, within the meaning of the above-named Act.
And I make this solemn declaration conscientiously believing the same to be true, and by virtue of the provisions of an Act of the General Assembly of New Zealand intituled “The Justices of the Peace Act, 1882.”

REFERRING to General Notice to Mariners, Victoria, dated 1st June, 1898, pages 60 and 61, it is hereby notified that the present wooden beacon on Swan Island for marking the navigable waters off Lonsdale Rock will shortly be moved, and replaced by a tubular steel beacon painted white with a red top.

This is near the position of the shoal reported by Captain Wilson, of the schr. “Zephyr,” in 1875, who stated that in 15° 58′ S. 177° 10′ W., he saw an extensive shoal on which there was a
