AFRICA.

Delagoa Bay.

MAGNETIC DISTURBANCE.—Recent obsers. point to a consider-
able local magnetic disturbance in different parts of Delagoa
Bay, the variation at Lorenzo Marques and in English
River for the year 1900 being about 23° 15′ W., while at
Timpson Pt., Shefina Isl., it is 20° 55′, and at Gibbon Pt.,
Elephant Isl., about 20° only. Obsers. by swinging at sea
off this place also point to the probability of the variation
off this part of the coast being less than that given on
variation chart by about 1½°, but sufficient data has not
yet been received to enable the chart to be corrected.

A F. white lt., elev. 43 ft. above H.W., R. 10 miles, is
exh. from an iron pile structure est. in approx. 25° 51½′ S.,
32° 53½′ E., on the Cockburn Shoal. May.

The pilot’s hulk has been moved, and is again near the
Cockburn Shoal buoy, in approx. 25° 53′ S., 32° 53¾′ E.,
with the Pile Lt.-H., S. 10° W., 4 cables. Pilots can be
obtained from, and discharged to, this hulk. Caution.—As
the pilot hulk appears to be liable to be shifted in position
without notice, it is evident it cannot be relied on as a nav.
mark. May.

CHINA SEA, ETC.

Yang tse Kiang.

The Kiutoan (surveying) beacon No. 44, srn. entr. to the
Yang tse, has been replaced by a pyra. openwork structure,
70 ft. high, 680 ft. S. 87° W. from its prev. site, owing to
the washing away of the river-bank. May.

Mud Fort beacon lt. has been moved 370 yd. N. 81° E., on
account of the washing-away of the river-bank. May.

Kiukiang.

Buckminster Isl. beacon lt. has been moved from
Chin-tê-chow Isl. to T’u-ch’iao, on the left (wrn.) bank
of the river, just below the mouth of the creek, and is
renamed “Buckminster beacon lt.” May.

A new F. white lt., Shensi Pt. beacon lt. is exh. May.

A new F. white lt., Tdngliu Isl. beacon lt., is exh. on
the lower, or nrn., end of the isl. May.

Formosa.—Paksa Pt.

On 15th Jan., 1901, an alt. red and white lt. every 10 secs.,
elev. 122 ft. above H.W., R. 18 miles, was to be exh. from a
white Lt.-H. 74 ft. high, in 25° 3′ N., 121° 3′ E., on the pt.
May.

PACIFIC OCEAN.

Sandwich Islands.

OAHU ISL.—HONOLULU HARB.—The following lts. will be
exh. on the buoys when large steamers require to enter or
leave the harb. : a. A white lt., on one or on each of the red
conical buoys Nos. 2, 3, 4, and 5, marking the starb. side of
the chan. b. One red lt. or two red lts. close together, on
the outer buoy (white can) marking the port side of the
chan., and a green lt. on the 6th or 7th pile. The pilots may
sometimes place a red lt. on No. 5 red buoy (in approx.
21° 17′ N., 157° 52′ W.), in which case no other lt. will be
shown. May.

LAYSAN ISL.—A F. white lt. (est. by a private company),
elev. about 52 ft. above H.W., R. five miles, is exh. during
the shipping season annually from April to September,
from a Lt.-H. 38 ft. high, in 25° 48′ N., 171° 52′ W., on the
n.-ern. pt. of the island. May.
