IN the New Zealand Gazette of the 7th February, 1901, there appeared a return showing the estimated yield of wheat, oats, and barley for the colony. The actual yields are now to hand, and are somewhat heavier than was anticipated, as the following table will show:—

Area for threshing was 206,465 acres, at 31·61 bushels .. .. 6,527,154 bushels.
Amount of wheat returned on hand, 30th October, 1900 (as per returns) .. .. 4,506,412 "

Wheat and flour exported from 1st November, 1900, to 28th February, 1901 .. .. 780,907 bushels.
Consumption for same period for population of 816,000, at the rate of 6 bushels per head per annum .. .. 1,632,000 "

Estimated quantity required for seed (say 220,000 acres at 2 bushels per acre) .. .. 440,000 bushels.

The following figures will show how the wheat crop of 1899–00 was disposed of up to 30th October, 1900:—
The wheat available for all purposes as from 28th February, 1900, was (see Gazette, 5th July, 1900, No. 60) .. .. .. .. 12,514,350 bushels.
This has been disposed of as follows:—
For seed, 208,084 acres at 2 bushels per acre .. .. 416,168 bushels.
Consumption for population, 804,035, from 28th February to 30th October, 1900, at 6 bushels per head per annum 3,216,140 "
Wheat and flour exported, 28th February to 30th October, 1900 .. .. .. .. 2,191,752 "
