Notice to Mariners No. 23 of 1901.

CLEVELAND BAY—SUNKEN WRECK OFF CAPE CLEVELAND.
Notice is hereby given that the wreck of the small steamer “Maggie Weston” lies sunk in Cleveland Bay bearing west half north one mile and a half from Cape Cleveland.

The position of the wreck is marked by a green buoy, and, as it lies in the fairway, masters of vessels are cautioned to exercise every care when navigating that locality.

WESTERN APPROACH TO TORRES STRAIT.—PROUDFOOT SHOAL LIGHTSHIP AWAY FROM POSITION.
Notice is hereby given that the Proudfoot Shoal Lightship is away from her position. She will be replaced as soon as practicable.

She was last reported ten miles south-west from Booby Island.

WESTERN APPROACH TO TORRES STRAIT.—TEMPORARY LIGHT-VESSEL, PROUDFOOT SHOAL.
Notice is hereby given that within the next few days, and until the lightship is removed, the schooner “Governor Cairns” will be moored in the approximate position lately occupied by the Proudfoot Shoal Lightship. During the night a fixed white light will be exhibited.

AFRICA.

East Coast.

INNAMBÁN RIVER ENTR.—The F. white lt. on Burra Pt. (23° 45′ S., 35° 33′ E.), S. side of river entr., has been replaced by a F. and fl. white lt. every 10 secs.—a partial ecl. precedes and follows the fl.—vis. from N. 5° E., through N., W., and S., to S. 25° E., elev. (probably the same as the old lt.) 80 ft., R. 15 miles, exh. from a white Lt.-H. with green cupola, 31 ft. high. March.

With reference to prev. notice, further notice has been received that the interval between the fls. of the F. and fl. lt. on Burra Pt. is 10 secs., and not 30 secs. as prev. stated. March.

Reuben Pt. (Vermelha Pt.) Lt.-H. (25° 59′ S. 32° 36′ E.), N. side of entr. to English River, has been increased in height, and is now 52 ft. high. March.

CHINA SEA, ETC.

Annam.

KULAO RAI ISL.—A fl. white lt. every 5 secs.—fl. 1/10 sec., ecl. 4 9/10 secs.—vis. from about N. 56° E., through N. and W., to S. 72° E., elev. 172 ft. above H.W., R. 20 miles, is perm. exh. from a grey pyra. Lt.-H. about 165 ft. high, in 15° 23¼′ N., 109° 6′ E., about 2 cables S. 60° W. from the N.E. pt. of the isl., entr. to Tong King Gulf. March.

China.

HONG KONG.—WAG LIAN LT.-H.—From 1st July, 1901, the fog gun at this Lt.-H. (22° 11′ N., 114° 18′ E.) will be fired twice in succ., with an interval of 15 secs. between the reports, every 12 mins. during the whole period of thick or foggy weather, and not, as formerly, only when a vessel’s fog sigs. were heard. March.

SHANTUNG.—KYAU CHAU BAY APPROACH.—The provis. F. white lt. in 35° 53′ N., 120° 52′ E., on Tcha-lien-tau Isl., is to be replaced by a fl. white lt. every 5 secs. March.

A F. red lt., vis. from N. 65° W., through N. and E., to S. 20° E., elev. 72 ft. above H.W., is exh. in 36° 31′ N., 120° 19′ E., on the islet now named Arcona Islet, 3½ cables S. 22° E. from Tsin-tau pier head. March.

Two white wooden beacons, each 39 ft. high, with rectangular topmarks, are est. in Clara Bay (approx. 36° 3′ N., 120° 20′ E.), Kyau Chau Bay entr., to mark the approx. direction of the submarine cable to Shanghai. The exact position of these beacons is not stated, but the front beacon, on the wrn. side of the bay, is elev. 88 ft. above H.W., and the rear beacon, elev. 269 ft. above H.W., lies about 1½ cables N. 22° E. from it. Vessels are forbidden to anchor erd. of the 2 beacons in line. March.

On 1st Dec., 1900, an elec. white lt. showing occ. white (lt. one sec., ecl. one sec.) from about S. 75° W., through W., to N. 75° W.; F. white from about N. 75° W. to N. 63° W., between Siau-kung-tau and Tai-kung-tau; group-occ. white (lt. 1 sec., ecl. 1 sec.; lt. 1 sec., ecl. 3 secs.) from about N. 63° W., through N. and E., to about S. 35° W.; and obsc. in other directions; elev. 98 ft. above H.W., R. 16 miles, was to be exh. from an iron Lt.-H. with masonry base, constr. in 36° 2½′ N., 120° 17½′ E., on Yu-nui-san, Kyau-chau Bay. Also a mooring-buoy has been est. in 9 fms. in the man-of-war anchorage, with the Obser. time-ball station S. 84° E., 11 cables. Jan.

PACIFIC OCEAN.

New Caledonia.

NEPUI BAY.—A white beacon, surm. by a ball, is est. on the one ft. rk., in approx. 21° 20′ S., 164° 58¾′ E., on the ern. side of the entr. to the bay, Port Muéo, with the beacon on Nepui Penin. N. 61° E., 4½ cables, and Obser. Rk. S. 22° W. March.

TARETI ISL. BEACON.—This beacon, in approx. 22° 23¼′ S., 166° 38¾′ E., destroyed by bad weather, will not be replaced. The isl. is now higher than formerly, and it is proposed to plant trees on it. March.

PRONY BAY ENTR.—The F. white lt., in 22° 24′ S., 166° 56′ E., on Cape Ndua, entr. to the bay, which it was intended to exh. in May, 1900, is not yet exh. Due notice is to be given when the lt. is exh. March.

Samoa Islands.

TUTUILA.—PANGO PANGO HARB.—A F. white lt., elev. 188 ft. above H.W., R. 8 miles, is exh. from a white tripod in 14° 19′ S., 170° 39½′ W., on the highest pt. of the bluff over Breaker Pt., E. side of entr. to the harb. March.

NORTH AMERICA.—WEST COAST.

California.

SAN FRANCISCO LT.-V.—On 4th March, 1901, the lts. of this Lt.-V., No. 70 (37° 45′ N., 122° 41′ W.), are to be perm. altered from elec.-fl. white lts. to F. white oil-lts., elev. 52 ft., R. 12 miles. March.

Lt.-V. No. 70 is replaced on her station, and the red gas buoy marked “Light-vessel Mooring” in black, and exh. a F. white lt. has been withdrawn. Feb.

SAN FRANCISCO APPROACH.—Noonday Rk. bell buoy has been repaired. Jan.

SAN FRANCISCO HARB.—A F. white lt., elev. 19 ft. above H.W., is exh. from the S.-ern. corner of the fog-sig. house on Lime Pt. (37° 49½′ N., 122° 28½′ W.), entr. to the harb.; and a F. red lt., elev. 34 ft. above H.W., is exh. from the S.-ern. corner of the fog-sig. house on Knox Pt., Angel Isl., which is about 2½ miles N.-erd. of Lime Pt. Feb.


Rules for New Zealand Rifle Clubs.

HIS Excellency the Governor has been pleased to approve of the following rules for rifle clubs:—

RULES FOR NEW ZEALAND RIFLE CLUBS.

  1. Rifle clubs formed under the following conditions may be embodied in the defence forces of the colony, and may form a reserve force for the Volunteers. Rifle clubs so formed will be known as Government rifle clubs.

Membership.

  1. Every Government rifle club shall consist of not less than fifteen members, and to distinguish them may wear badges bearing the letters N.Z.R.C., and any other person
