All pastoral country more or less broken, heavily timbered with tawa, rata, rimu, tawai, and dense undergrowth; the soil is generally poor, resting upon a formation principally of papa, with shell-rock at intervals, and outcrops of sandstone. Streams are numerous, but run in deep gorges. Birch will be found on several of the spurs. The hills rise from 700 ft. to 1,200 ft. above the streams. Distance from Waitotara, from forty-seven to fifty miles via the Waitotara Valley Road, which has been opened for dray traffic to within about five miles of the Koane Road running through the block. Access may also be obtained from Eltham via the Rawhitiroa Road, distance from thirty-eight to forty-four and a quarter miles; eleven miles of this road have been metalled, another nine miles opened for dray traffic, the remainder has been opened as a bridle-road to its junction with the Waitotara Valley Road.
As witness the hand of His Excellency the Governor, this twentieth day of December, one thousand nine hundred.
