Notice to Mariners No. 13 of 1901.
KERMADEC ISLANDS, PACIFIC OCEAN.
Marine Department,
Wellington, N.Z., 13th March, 1901.
CAPTAIN BOLLONS, of the New Zealand Government Steamer “Hinemoa,” reports having examined the position of the Wolverine Rock, situated in West Bay, Sunday Island, and marked “P.D.” on the chart.
The rock has an area of about fifty square feet, with 9ft. of water on it at low-water spring tides, and lies 8½ cables off the beach.
There are depths of from six to eight fathoms all round, at a distance of half a cable’s length from the rock.
The following correct magnetic bearings, taken from the rock, give the position:—
Hutchison Bluff, N.W.
Smith Bluff, S. by E. ½ E.
Cone Hill, above the centre of beach, N.E. by N.
The water was in a very disturbed state on the north-west side of the rock, and half a cable from it. At intervals of about five minutes the surface was disturbed by swirling, and bubbling rising from the bottom, the water being perfectly smooth elsewhere. No perceptible difference in temperature of the water was noticed when tested by the hand.
