Rural Lands in the Wellington Land District open for Sale or Selection.

IN pursuance and exercise of the powers and authorities conferred upon me by the one-hundred-and-thirty-sixth section
of “The Land Act, 1892,” I, Uchter John Mark, Earl of Ranfurly, the Governor of the Colony of New Zealand,
having received the report of the Surveyor-General in this behalf, as in the said section is provided, do hereby declare
that the rural lands enumerated in the Schedule hereto shall be open for sale or selection on and after the
twenty-sixth day of March, one thousand nine hundred and one; and also that the lands mentioned in the said Schedule
may, at the option of the applicant, be purchased for cash, or be selected for occupation with right of purchase
or on lease in perpetuity, or, in respect of any land containing or supposed to contain any metal, mineral, or valuable
stone, be selected on lease in perpetuity only; and I do hereby also fix the prices at which the said lands shall be
sold, occupied, or leased, as mentioned in the said Schedule hereto, and do declare that the said lands shall be sold,
occupied, or leased under and subject to the provisions of “The Land Act, 1892.”

FIRST-CLASS LAND.
Rangiwaea Block.

This section is situated in the Rangiwaea Block, on the right bank of the Turakina River. The access is from
Karioi, which is about twelve miles distant, by the main road for about three miles east of Karioi, and by unformed
horse-track through open Native land (by permission of the owners) to the north boundary of the block; thence by Turakina Valley Road, which is a formed bridle-track, for about a mile, the rest is cleared pack-track through bush. The
section is also reached from Taihape, which is about sixteen miles distant, via Adamson’s Track, which is formed as dray-road to Paengawa, about five miles, and as bridle-track for another mile; the rest is unformed horse-track through Nga-urukehu and Raunui Reserves (by permission of the owners). The ultimate access will be by roads through Native lands
eastwards to the main trunk railway-line, and down the Turakina Valley to Hunter ville. The section comprises flat-topped spurs on the western portion, and undulating land sloping towards Turakina River, forming easy slopes and flats
along the road-frontage. The soil is of good quality, resting on papa-and-sandstone formation. The forest is medium
heavy to light, comprising chiefly rimu, matai, maire, miro, kahikatea, &c., with a medium undergrowth of maku,
mahoe, kotukutuku, tarata, &c. The section is well watered by permanent streams. The elevation ranges from about
1,550 ft. to 1,900 ft. above sea-level. The improvements comprise about 37 acres felled and grassed, at 45s. per acre—
total, £83 5s.

Marton No. 3 Block.

Section 22, Block XIV., Manganui, is situated in the Waimarino District, Marton No. 3 Block, on the banks of the
Manganui-a-te-ao River. The access is from Raetihi, which is about ten miles distant, via the Raetihi-Ohura Road,
which is formed and metalled for about three miles and a half, formed for dray traffic for another four miles, and formed
as bridle-track to within about 12 to 15 chains of the southern boundary of the section. The section comprises
hilly country, with good flats along the Orautoha Stream. The soil is of good quality, resting on papa formation. The
forest is of the ordinary mixed character, with the usual undergrowth. The section is well watered by the Manganui-a-te-ao River and Orautoha Stream.

Section 23, Block XIV., Manganui, is situated in the Waimarino District, Marton No. 3 Block. The access is from
Raetihi, which is about nine miles and a half distant, via the Raetihi-Ohura Road, which is formed and metalled for
about three miles and a half, formed for dray traffic for another four miles, the rest formed bridle-track only. The section
comprises hilly country, with good flats along the Orautoha Stream. The soil is of good quality, resting on papa formation. The forest is of the ordinary mixed character, with the usual undergrowth.

Wanganui United West Block.

Section 3, Block X., Makotuku, is situated in the Waimarino District, Wanganui United West Block. The access is
from Raetihi, which is about two miles and a quarter distant, via the Hukeroa Road, which is formed as a bridle-track to
the section. The section comprises hilly and undulating land, with occasional flats. The soil is of good quality, resting
on papa formation. The forest is mixed, comprising chiefly rimu, miro, matai, tawa, rata, &c., with thick undergrowth
of the usual kind. The section is well watered by streams.

SECOND-CLASS LAND.

This section is situated on the main coach-road, about two miles south of the Rimutaka Saddle, on both sides of the
road. The access is from Kaitoke, which is about five miles distant. The section comprises steep hilly land. The soil
is of a poor rocky nature, resting on rock formation. Undergrowth consists of fern, cottonwood, broom, &c. The
section is well watered by a small creek. The elevation ranges from about 1,500 ft. to 2,000 ft. above sea-level.
