THE following Notices to Mariners, received from the Portmaster, Brisbane, Queensland, are published for general information.

CAPRICORN CHANNEL.
Reported Coral Patch.

Notice is hereby given that Mr. Alexander Goodall, of the s.s. “Albany,” reports the existence of a coral patch in the following approximate position, viz:—
North Reef Lighthouse, S. 36° E., distant 7¼ miles.
When passing over it the bottom was plainly seen, and the vessel’s behaviour indicated very shoal water.
This may be identical with the patch marked “Breakers seen, 1886,” on charts, 1¾ miles distant from the above position.
The locality should be avoided.

CAPE GRAFTON TO HOPE ISLANDS.
Shoal Soundings.

Notice is hereby given that Commander Monro, of H.M.S. “Dart,” reports that soundings of 5½ fathoms at L.W.S. were obtained in the following position, viz.:—
Double Island bearing S. 9° W., distant 8⁶⁄₁₀ miles.
Fitzroy Island bearing S. 44° E.
Latitude, 16° 35′ S.
Longitude, 145° 43½′ E. } approximate.
The depth around was 12 to 14 fathoms.
The above position is about one mile off the track recommended, and, as there may be less water, masters of vessels are advised not to cross over the position. Further examination will be made.

Revocation of Appointment of Sufferance Wharves, and of Places for the Examination of Goods.

CUSTOMS.—In exercise of the power in me for this purpose vested by “The Customs Laws Consolidation Act, 1882,” I, the Commissioner of Trade and Customs, do, by this order under my hand, revoke and annul the appointment of sufferance wharves appointed at Wellington for the loading and unloading of free and duty-paid goods and New Zealand produce, and of the buildings appointed to be places where goods may be deposited for examination on the landing thereof, as appointed and described in Commissioner’s Order No. 560, of the 14th day of January, 1897.

Sufferance Wharves and Places for the Examination of Goods appointed.

CUSTOMS.—In exercise of the power in me for this purpose vested by “The Customs Laws Consolidation Act, 1882,” I, the Commissioner of Trade and Customs, do hereby appoint that
CUSTOMHOUSE QUAY,
WATERLOO QUAY (including the Ferry Jetty) from Customhouse Quay to the Wool Jetty,
shall be sufferance wharves at the Port of Wellington for the loading and unloading of free and duty-paid goods and New Zealand produce; and that the under-mentioned buildings shall be places where goods may be deposited for examination on the landing thereof, viz.:—
WHARF STORES.
Ten situated on the Queen’s Wharf, marked A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, P;
Five on Jervois Quay, marked M, N, O, Q, R;
One on the Wool Jetty, marked L; and
Two on the Glasgow Wharf, marked S, T.
Given under my hand, at Wellington, this tenth day of December, one thousand nine hundred and one.

Notice under “The Shops and Shop-assistants Act Amendment Act, 1895,” appointing an Hour for closing on Saturday Night.

IN exercise of the power in this behalf conferred upon me by “The Shops and Shop-assistants Act Amendment Act, 1895,” and “The Shops and Shop-assistants Act Amendment Act, 1896,” and in accordance with a requisition signed by a three-fifths majority of the shopkeepers in the Borough of Dannevirke, I, Charles Houghton Mills, Commissioner of Trade and Customs, acting for and on behalf of the Minister of Labour, hereby intimate that on and after the 4th day of January, 1902, all the shops in the said Borough of Dannevirke shall be closed on the evening of Saturday in each week at the hour of 10 of the clock.

Plants declared to be “Noxious Weeds.”—Notice No. 680.

Bonus for the Production of Quicksilver.

Mines Office,
Wellington, 7th June, 1900.

NOTICE is hereby given that a bonus of fourpence (4d.) per pound will be paid on the production of the first one hundred thousand pounds weight (100,000 lb.) of good marketable retorted quicksilver, free from all impurities, from any mine in New Zealand, on the following conditions, that is to say:—

  1. That at least one-third of the quantity is produced on or before the 31st March, 1903, and the remaining two-thirds on or before the 31st March, 1904.
  2. No bonus will be payable until the whole of the one hundred thousand pounds (100,000 lb.) of quicksilver has been produced as stipulated to the satisfaction of an officer to be appointed by the Minister of Mines, and on whose certificate alone the bonus will be paid.
  3. In the event of more than one person producing the required quantities of quicksilver before the dates named, inquiry will be made by the officer above referred to, when, if it is found that each applicant is equally entitled to a bonus, the amount will be divided in proportion to the quantities produced by each applicant, but in no case shall any bonus be paid until at least one hundred thousand pounds (100,000 lb.) of quicksilver has been produced in the aggregate.
