These sections are situated in the Makuri Township, and comprise sloping and flat land; the latter is alluvial soil, resting on gravel, the remainder is loam resting on limestone formation. The bush has been felled and the land grassed, and mostly cleared of surface timber. Wineberry appears in places. The owners of improvements on any of these sections will be allowed to remove their fencing, &c., within one month from date of sale.

As witness the hand of His Excellency the Governor, this twenty-second day of November, one thousand nine hundred and one.

C. H. MILLS, For Minister of Lands.

Duty to be levied on Compoboard.

RANFURLY, Governor.

WHEREAS a certain article of merchandise known as "compoboard," being timber with a backing of paper-pulp cemented to the timber, is imported into New Zealand, which article, in the opinion of the Commissioner of Trade and Customs, is a substitute for sawn timber dressed (the latter being a dutiable article under "The Customs and Excise Duties Act, 1888"), and which can be used for a similar purpose as sawn timber dressed:

Now, therefore, I, Uchter John Mark, Earl of Ranfurly, the Governor of the Colony of New Zealand, in pursuance and exercise of the power and authority conferred upon me by the seventeenth section of "The Customs and Excise Duties Act, 1888," do hereby direct that from and after the date hereof there shall be levied on the article known as "compoboard" a duty of four shillings the hundred feet superficial, such rate being fixed in proportion to the degree in which the said compoboard approximates in its quality or uses to the said sawn timber dressed.

As witness the hand of His Excellency the Governor, this tenth day of December, one thousand nine hundred and one.

C. H. MILLS,
Commissioner of Trade and Customs.
