petent officer appointed for that purpose, to determine as far as possible the absence of noxious insects and plant-diseases which it would be prejudicial to this colony to allow to be introduced ; and it shall be the duty of the consignee to open all such packages, cases, or coverings for the purpose of the examination aforesaid, and to afford every facility to the said examining officer during his examination.

  1. On the aforesaid officer being satisfied as to the absence of noxious insects and plant-diseases in such trees, plants, fruits, tubers, roots, bulbs, or portions thereof, and their packages, cases, pots, or coverings, he shall give a certificate to that effect to the consignee, and without such certificate no such articles shall be permitted to enter the colony.

  2. All trees, plants, fruits, tubers, roots, bulbs, or portions thereof, or the packages, cases, pots, or coverings in which they may be packed, which shall be found to be infected with any noxious insect or plant-disease shall be cleansed or disinfected by the consignees in the manner prescribed by, and to the satisfaction of, the examining officer ; and if it is not so cleansed or disinfected, or if such disinfection shall be deemed or found to be ineffectual, shall be immediately destroyed.

  3. The importation into this colony of any stone-fruit tree, or of any portion thereof whatever, from the United States of America or the Dominion of Canada is prohibited, unless such importation be accompanied by a sworn declaration stating the trees, or portions thereof as the case may be, are not from areas where either of the diseases known as peach-yellows and peach-rosette exist or have existed, nor that such trees, or portions thereof, were grown or produced from seed grown in lands, or adjacent to lands, in which either disease mentioned exists or has existed.

  4. Subject to the foregoing regulations, stone-fruit trees, and all portions thereof, may be imported into the colony, provided that such consignment of trees, or portions thereof, be accompanied by a sworn declaration from the consignor that the articles proposed to be imported were not grown in the United States of America or in the Dominion of Canada, and without such declaration no such articles shall be permitted to enter the colony.

  5. On the examining officer being satisfied as to the sufficiency of the declaration in section 6 above mentioned, he shall give a certificate to that effect to the consignees, and without such certificate no such article shall be permitted to enter the colony.

  6. The Government does not hold itself responsible for any loss or damage that may result from the destruction of the articles under the provisions of these regulations, or from any process that may be considered necessary to cleanse or disinfect the articles, or to discover the existence or otherwise of any noxious insect or plant-disease.

  7. No charge will be made for the examination of consignments, but the importer will in every case be charged with the actual cost of treatment.

  8. These regulations shall not apply to canned or preserved fruits.

  9. For the purpose of these regulations the Port of Durban will be regarded as the one port of entry for all fruit-trees, plants, or portions thereof.

  10. These regulations will not apply to consignments which it can be proved to the satisfaction of the Department of Agriculture were on order on the date upon which these regulations were promulgated.

Alterations to the Scale of Fares, Rates, and Charges in Force upon the New Zealand Government Railways.

IN pursuance of all powers and authorities enabling me under “ The Public Works Act, 1894,” and any amendment thereof, and also of “ The Government Railways Act, 1894,” I, Joseph George Ward, the Minister for Railways, do hereby make the following alterations in the scale of fares, rates, and charges in force on the New Zealand Government railways open for traffic, such alterations to come into force on and after the 29th day of October, 1900 :—

PART I.—GENERAL FARES AND REGULATIONS.
Cancel—(41.) MAORIS ATTENDING NATIVE LAND COURTS.
Insert—
(41.) MAORIS ATTENDING NATIVE LAND COURTS AND TANGIS.

  1. Maoris travelling to attend sittings of the Native Land Court and tangis may, at the option of the Railway Department, be granted return tickets at three-fourths the ordinary return fares. Application, specifying the date on and place at which the Court or tangi will be held, must first be made to the District Manager at least seven days before the opening of the Court and at least one day before tickets are required for a tangi. The department reserves to itself the right to decline any application.

LOCAL FARES AND REGULATIONS.
AUCKLAND, WELLINGTON-NAPIER-NEW PLYMOUTH, AND HURUNUI-BLUFF SECTIONS.
Cancel regulations re workers’ two-shilling weekly tickets.
Insert—
Workers’ weekly tickets (second class) will be charged as follows :—

For distances not exceeding two miles .. .. 1 6
For distances over two miles, and not exceeding ten miles .. .. .. .. .. 2 0

The tickets will be issued from any station on any one of the suburban lines specified below to any station on the same line, subject to the following conditions :—

The tickets will not be issued between stations situated on different suburban lines. They will expire on Saturday of the week in which issued, and are limited to one outward and one homeward trip per day, and for use on the outward journey by trains arriving at the destination-station before 8 a.m. On the homeward journey they may be used by any time-table train (mail and express trains excepted) after 9 a.m.

The tickets will be available only for use between the stations specified thereon, and will be issued only to persons resident in the neighbourhood of the issuing station, and for use by the purchaser, whose name must be inscribed thereon. They are not available for break of journey nor for use on Sundays, and are not transferable. No reduction in charge will be made for children.

The portions of a ticket are available only for use on the day of the week named thereon, provided such portions are used on the specified days and during the week for which the ticket is available. Portions not so used are not available for use at any other time.

At officered stations applications for workers’ tickets must be made at least ten minutes before time of departure of the train by which the ticket is intended to be used. Tickets from flag-stations can be obtained from guard of train.

The tickets will be issuable on the following suburban lines only :—

AUCKLAND SECTION.
Avondale-Auckland, Onehunga-Auckland, Otahuhu-Auckland.

WELLINGTON-NAPIER-NEW PLYMOUTH SECTION.
Lower Hutt-Te Aro.

HURUNUI-BLUFF SECTION.
Lyttelton - Christchurch, Christchurch - Islington, Port Chalmers-Dunedin, Dunedin-Mosgiel.

Minimum quantity, 1½ tons.
Insert—
Minimum quantity (except for bonedust, for which it will be 5 cwt.), 1½ tons.

(23.) Stock, Implements, &c., for Shows.
The provisions of this regulation will also apply to ploughs used at prize ploughing-matches.

PART IV.—GOODS: LOCAL RATES.
NELSON SECTION.
Class H, undumped, consigned from Motupiko to Nelson or Port, will be charged 2s. 11d. per bale.

HURUNUI-BLUFF SECTION.
Wool, undumped, Wedderburn to Port Chalmers, will be charged 6d. per bale less than the classified rates,
