Rural Lands in the Taranaki Land District open for Sale or Selection.

RANFURLY, Governor.

IN pursuance and exercise of the powers and authorities conferred upon me by the one-hundred-and-thirty-sixth section of “The Land Act, 1892,” I, Uchter John Mark, Earl of Ranfurly, the Governor of the Colony of New Zealand, having received the report of the Surveyor-General in this behalf, as in the said section is provided, do hereby declare that the rural lands enumerated in the Schedule hereto shall be open for sale or selection on and after the eleventh day of October, one thousand nine hundred; and also that the lands mentioned in the said Schedule may, at the option of the applicant, be purchased for cash, or be selected for occupation with right of purchase or on lease in perpetuity, or, in respect of any land containing or supposed to contain any metal, mineral, or valuable stone, be selected on lease in perpetuity only; and I do hereby also fix the prices at which the said lands shall be sold, occupied, or leased, as mentioned in the said Schedule hereto, and do declare that the said lands shall be sold, occupied, or leased under and subject to the provisions of “The Land Act, 1892.”

All forest; broken country, wholly covered with forest consisting chiefly of tawa, with a few rimu, kahikatea, hinau, &c., with the usual undergrowth; the soil is well watered, resting upon a papa formation. The elevation is from 500 ft. to 1,480 ft. above sea-level, the height of the hills varying from 300 ft. to 600 ft. above valleys. Access will be by way of the Mokau Road, then by following either the Okoke Road, which leaves the Mokau Road about two miles and a quarter from Urenui Township, and which is partly formed as a bridle-road; or the Uruti and Moki Roads, which leave the Mokau Road about twenty-one miles from Waitara Railway-station, the sections lying from thirty-two to forty-two miles from that place. The Mokau Road is metalled to within about seven miles of Uruti Road, and the Uruti Road is formed as a dray-road to its junction with the Moki Road, of which a small portion has been formed. Section 2, Block XII., Upper Waitara, may be approached by the Ohura Road from Stratford, about fifty-four miles, thence by the Marco Road to its junction with the Mangaowata Road.

Hilly and undulating pastoral country, wholly covered with forest consisting of rata, rimu, hinau, tawai, tawa, pukatea; some of the sections containing matai, miro, and a little totara, with the usual undergrowth; the soil varies from fair to good, resting upon a formation of papa and sandstone, and is well watered. In the sections on the south side of Waitara River the country is more broken, the hills rising from 500 ft. to 1,440 ft. above sea-level, the ridges being about 500 ft. above valleys. Access to the sections will be by the Mangahia Road, a branch of the Mokau Road, the Uruti and Moki Roads, also branches of the same road; the distance from Waitara Railway-station being from twenty-seven to thirty-eight miles. The Mokau Road is metalled to within about seven miles of its junction with Uruti Road, which latter is formed as a dray-road to its junction with the Moki Road, a small portion of which is formed; the Mangahia Road is partly formed as a bridle-road.
