also between N. 45° W. and N. 21° E.; red between N. 21° E. and N. 43° E.; to the northward of the latter bearing it will be white until obscured by the land, and between the bearings of N. 70° W. and N. 45° W. it will also be obscured.

Leading-lights, South Channel.

Near the mouth of the Boyne River two leading-lights will be shown, the front light from a skeleton tower 30 ft. high, having a total elevation of 66 ft. above high water, and the back light from a small square building situated on a hill at the back, at a total elevation of 121 ft. above high water. Both structures are painted white, and the distance between them is 5,750 ft. The lights on these structures will be 4th order holophotes, and will be visible 12 and 14½ miles respectively. These lights, forming the first lead, bear when in line S. 75° W.

The second line of leading-lights is placed on the slope of the hill on the west side of Gatcombe Head. The front light is in a small house at an elevation of 32 ft. above high water, and the back light on a skeleton tower 30 ft. high, the total elevation of the light being 66 ft. above high water. It is anticipated that the lights for the South Channel will be ready for exhibition in August. Instructions for using the lights and further notice will be issued before they are exhibited.

INNER ROUTE, TORRES STRAIT.—NEW LIGHTHOUSE, PIPON ISLANDS, AND REMOVAL OF CHANNEL ROCK LIGHTSHIP.

It is intended to erect a skeleton iron tower on the South Islet of the Pipon Island Group carrying a lantern with 4th order dioptric light. The tower will be 60 ft. high and the focal plane 55 ft. above high water. The skeleton structure will be painted red, and the lantern white with a red dome. The light will be visible through an arc of 160°, white between bearings of N. 72° W. (through south) to N. 53° E., red between N. 53° E. and N. 76° E., and white between N. 76° E. and N. 88° E., and will be intensified over an arc of 11° through the Barrow Strait. The light will be visible 13 miles in clear weather.

It is expected that the light will be ready for exhibition about the 15th November, 1900, when the lightship will be removed, further notice of which will be given.

Tenders.

TENDERS will be received at the General Post Office, Wellington, until the 15th proximo, for the manufacture and supply of EIGHTEEN (18) IRON PILLAR LETTER-BOXES.

Plans and specifications may be seen at this office, and the Chief Post-offices, Auckland, Christchurch, and Dunedin.

The lowest or any tender will not necessarily be accepted.

TENDERS will be received at the General Post Office, Wellington, until Tuesday, 28th August, for the supply of such PARCEL-POST HAMPERS AND BASKETS as may be required for a period of three years from the 1st September, 1900, to the 31st August, 1903.

Orders for hampers and baskets will be given for lots of about 50 at one time, and the successful contractor must be prepared to make delivery of such lots at the rate of six hampers and twenty baskets a week.

Samples may be seen at the Chief Post-offices throughout the colony.

Tenders to be accompanied by a completed sample of each of the three kinds of hampers in use, and of the basket and bottle-basket for mail-bags. In the case of unsuccessful tenderers the samples will be purchased, provided they are considered fair and useful specimens by the officer appointed to examine samples.

The lowest or any tender will not necessarily be accepted.

Bonus on Mineral Oil produced from Shale obtained in New Zealand.—Extension of Time.

Notice of intention to claim the bonus must be given in writing to the Colonial Secretary not later than the 31st December, 1900.

The claim must be made before the 30th June, 1901.

Bonus on Mineral Oil produced from Shale obtained in New Zealand.

NOTICE is hereby given that a bonus will be paid for the production of mineral oil under the following conditions:—

  1. A bonus of 1s. per gallon (£5,000) will be paid on the first 100,000 gallons of mineral oil produced from shale obtained in the Colony of New Zealand, the oil to be of a quality approved of by Government, and to be sold at a price not exceeding 1s. a gallon at any port of shipment in the colony.

  2. Notice of intention to claim the aforesaid bonus must be given in writing to the Colonial Secretary not later than the 31st December, 1899.

  3. The claim must be made before the 30th June, 1900.

  4. The first claimant who proves to the satisfaction of the Government that he has fulfilled all the conditions to be the recipient of the bonus.

  5. The other conditions—as to quantity, priority, quality, and value—to be fulfilled to the satisfaction of an officer appointed for the purpose by the Government.

Bonus for the Production of Quicksilver.

Mines Office,
Wellington, 7th June, 1900.

NOTICE is hereby given that a bonus of fourpence (4d.) per pound will be paid on the production of the first one hundred thousand pounds weight (100,000 lb.) of good marketable retorted quicksilver, free from all impurities, from any mine in New Zealand, on the following conditions, that is to say:—

  1. That at least one-third of the quantity is produced on or before the 31st March, 1903, and the remaining two-thirds on or before the 31st March, 1904.

  2. No bonus will be payable until the whole of the one hundred thousand pounds (100,000 lb.) of quicksilver has been produced as stipulated to the satisfaction of an officer to be appointed by the Minister of Mines, and on whose certificate alone the bonus will be paid.

  3. In the event of more than one person producing the required quantities of quicksilver before the dates named, inquiry will be made by the officer above referred to, when, if it is found that each applicant is equally entitled to a bonus, the amount will be divided in proportion to the quantities produced by each applicant, but in no case shall any bonus be paid until at least one hundred thousand pounds (100,000 lb.) of quicksilver has been produced in the aggregate.
