Fares and season-ticket rates from stations on the Dunedin-Port Chalmers line to and from Port Chalmers, Upper and Lower, will be computed on the basis of the shorter distance.

In no case shall the fares between any two stations on the Invercargill-Bluff line exceed the fares between Invercargill and the outer station.

PART II.—LUGGAGE, PARCELS, HORSES, ETC.

(25.) THEATRICAL COMPANIES’ luggage will be conveyed as follows:—

By Passenger Train.—Companies of not less than 6 adult passengers will be allowed to take free of charge 2 cwt. of effects for each adult ticket held. All effects in excess of the quantity specified will, if loaded in guard’s van or in same vehicle as the company’s free luggage, be charged 6d. for each 56 lb. or fractional part thereof for every 50 miles or fraction of 50 miles. If loaded and conveyed in special trucks the charge will be: For each four-wheel truck, 6d. per mile; for each bogie truck, 1s. per mile. Minimum charge per four-wheel truck, 15s.; per bogie truck, £1 10s.

By Goods Train.—Scenery, Class A; luggage, half rates, Class B. But in no case are charges to exceed the rates for conveyance by passenger train.

All loading and unloading must be done by owners at their own risk and responsibility.

PART III.—GOODS REGULATIONS.

(11.) LIME FOR MANURING FARM LANDS.

These regulations will cease to operate on the 31st August, 1900.

(21.) RETURNED EMPTIES.

Insert—

Returned empty butter-kegs, when consigned by the original consignee and from the original receiving-station to the original consignor and forwarding-station, will be conveyed free of charge. This regulation will apply only to empty butter-kegs previously carried over the railway full.

PART IV.—GOODS: LOCAL RATES.

Timber other than white-pine from Mamaku to New-market and Auckland will be charged 3s. per 100 superficial feet.

WELLINGTON-NAPIER-NEW PLYMOUTH SECTION.

New Plymouth Breakwater Line.

Goods to be despatched inland by rail will be charged 1s. per ton for redespaching (minimum charge, 6d.), such charge to be in addition to the classified rates from the Breakwater.

TRINITY COLLEGE, DUBLIN.

Arts Studies.

THE University of Dublin is prepared to recognise the arts studies of the following colonial and Indian universities, and such others as the Board and Council may from time to time direct to be added to the list: The Universities of Adelaide, Allahabad, Bombay, Calcutta, Cape of Good Hope, Madras, Melbourne, McGill (Montreal), New Brunswick, New Zealand, Punjab, Sydney, Tasmania, Toronto.

Any student producing the proper certificates that he has passed two years in arts studies at such universities, or has passed the examinations belonging to that period, will be entitled to put his name on the College books as a senior freshman, a student with one year’s credit; with this reservation: that, if the course of arts which he has pursued does not include all the subjects of the junior freshman year, the Senior Lecturer may require him to qualify by examination in the omitted subject or subjects within one month after his name has been entered on the books.

Furthermore, the Senior Lecturer was authorised by the Board, upon due inquiry, to admit students who have passed the matriculation examination of the University of Cape Colony without further examination.

Medical Studies.

The Board, on the recommendation of the Medical School Committee, have adopted the following resolutions (13th January, 1900):—

“That, in medical schools recognised by the University of Dublin, two consecutive anni medici, taken at any period during the four years of the medical curriculum, be recognised as qualifying for admission to the examinations of the School of Physic.”

“The medical schools which the Board and the School of Physic are now prepared to recognise are,—

“In India—Madras, Bombay, Lahore, Calcutta.

“In Australia—Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide.

“In Ceylon—Colombo.

“In New Zealand—Otago.

“In Canada—Montreal (McGill), Toronto.

“In Tasmania—Hobart.”

THE following Notices to Mariners, received from the Portmaster, Brisbane, Queensland, are published for general information.

NEW TOWER AND ALTERATION OF GATCOMBE HEAD LIGHTHOUSE, AND ESTABLISHMENT OF LEADING-LIGHTS FOR SOUTH CHANNEL, PORT CURTIS.

It is intended to erect a new tower at Gatcombe Head about 450 ft. north by east of the present tower. The tower will be 38 ft. high, circular in shape, and painted white with a red dome. The light will be at an elevation of 122 ft. above high water, and will be visible for 13 miles from a ship’s deck in clear weather.

The red sector seawards will be discontinued. The light will be white between the bearings S. 29° W. and N. 70° W.,
