Rural Lands in the Wellington Land District open for Sale or Selection.

IN pursuance and exercise of the powers and authorities conferred upon me by the one-hundred-and-thirty-sixth section of “The Land Act, 1892,” I, Uchter John Mark, Earl of Ranfurly, the Governor of the Colony of New Zealand, having received the report of the Surveyor-General in this behalf, as in the said section is provided, do hereby declare that the rural lands enumerated in the Schedule hereto shall be open for sale or selection on and after the twenty-eighth day of August, one thousand nine hundred; and also that the lands mentioned in the said Schedule may, at the option of the applicant, be purchased for cash, or be selected for occupation with right of purchase or on lease in perpetuity, or, in respect of any land containing or supposed to contain any metal, mineral, or valuable stone, be selected on lease in perpetuity only; and I do hereby also fix the prices at which the said lands shall be sold, occupied, or leased, as mentioned in the said Schedule hereto, and do declare that the said lands shall be sold, occupied, or leased under and subject to the provisions of “The Land Act, 1892.”

WELLINGTON LAND DISTRICT.

FIRST-CLASS LAND.

Masterton Reform Block.

This section is situated in the Masterton Reform Block. The access will be from Makuri via Makuri–Mangatiti Road, which is formed as a dray-road as far as the Range Road, a distance of about seven miles; the remaining three miles is cleared only. The present access is from Pongaroa Township, which is about seven miles and a half distant, by three miles dray-road, two miles horse-track; the remainder is cleared only. The section comprises flat, undulating, and low hilly land, covered with mixed forest, with the exception of about twelve acres of bush felled in 1898, and now partly covered with secondary growth; the soil is of good quality, resting on papa formation; the forest is heavy, comprising rimu, rata, tawa, whitewood, &c., and light undergrowth of supplejack, konini, &c. The section is at present watered by small creeks.

This section is situated in the Masterton Reform Block. The section comprises flat, undulating, and low hilly land, covered with mixed forest comprising rimu, rata, tawa, whitewood, &c., with light undergrowth of supplejack, konini, &c., and is well watered by a creek.

Salisbury Block.

This section is situated in the Salisbury Block, on the Umutioi Road, the access being from Ashhurst, which is about twenty-four miles distant, by twenty miles of metalled dray-road, and the remainder formed bridle-track. The section comprises hilly land, broken, and badly cut by a deep gorge; the soil is of fair quality, resting on papa, sandstone, and shingle formation; the forest is mixed, comprising rimu, matai, tawa, rata, a few totaras, &c., with usual undergrowth. The section is well watered by small streams.

Waimarino-Atuahai Block.

Weighted with £7 10s. for improvements.

This section is situated on the coach-road from Pipiriki to Karioi, the access being from Pipiriki, which is about eleven miles and a half distant, and from Raetihi Township, which is about five miles and a half distant by the main coach-road. The area comprises rough broken country; the soil is of good quality, resting on papa formation; the forest is mixed, and comprises rimu, miro, rata, tawa, tawhero, &c., with the usual undergrowth. The improvements comprise two small patches of bush felled and burned but not sown in grass.

SECOND-CLASS LAND.

This section is situated in the Waitotara District, in a locality generally known as “Block IX.” The access is from Waitotara, which is about eight miles distant via the Waitotara Valley and “Block IX.” Roads, which are formed for dray traffic to within about one mile of the land. The section comprises all rough hilly land, with no flat; the soil is of fairly good quality, resting on papa formation; the forest is rather light, comprising the usual mixed kind, tawa, rewarewa, rimu, rata, &c., with thick undergrowth. The section is watered by a small stream.

North-east Puketoi Block.

This section is situated on the Makairo Road, in the North-east Puketoi Block, and is distant about five miles and a half from Makairo Post-office and School. The access is from Pahiatua or Woodville via Makairo, which are about twenty miles distant, sixteen miles being dray-road, and the remainder formed bridle-track. The section comprises hilly land with ridges and spurs; the soil is of fair quality, resting on shale or rotten-rock formation; the forest is mixed, comprising rata, rimu, birch, konini, with thick undergrowth of whitewood, kawakawa, supplejack, &c. The section is well watered.
