Wilhelm Schmidt, of p.s. “Pakiti,” a steward, aged twenty-one years, from drowning at Shortland Wharf, Thames, New Zealand, on 4th June, 1897. Mr. Hearling jumped from the wharf, swam about a hundred yards in a swift current, and succeeded in placing a life-buoy over Schmidt’s head and under his arms. Schmidt was sinking for the third time, and would certainly have been drowned but for Hearling’s timely assistance. The water was bitterly cold: Certificate of merit.
1778.—JOHN WILLIAM RYAN, of Thames, New Zealand, a cordial-manufacturer, aged thirty-three years, who rescued Frederick Alley, of Hikutai, Thames, New Zealand, a farmer, aged thirty years, from drowning in the Thames River on 11th July, 1898. Ryan, having taken off his boots and coat, plunged off the wharf. The risk incurred lay in the fact that Mr. Alley fell over in a fit, to which he was subject, and he had sunk twice when Ryan, after swimming a hundred yards, caught hold of him, and held him up until a boat arrived, and he was hauled in. Exertions had to be used to extract the water from his lungs; he was then taken to the hospital, where he was treated by the doctors: Certificate of merit.
1783.—DAVID FREDERICK LUNDON, of Tauranga, New Zealand, an accountant, aged twenty-six years, who rescued Greg Norris, of the same place, mariner, aged twenty-two years, from drowning in the Tauranga Harbour at 1 p.m. on the 26th December, 1897. Five persons were in the yacht “Eliza,” which capsized in the Tauranga Harbour, and sank. Lundon took charge of Norris, as he could not swim, and after great difficulty swam with him two hundred yards to the shore, both greatly exhausted. Two of the others swam ashore, but the other was drowned in his attempt: Bronze medal.
1784.—GEORGE WILLIAM WASHINGTON COZENS, of Auckland, New Zealand, a seaman, aged twenty-one years, who rescued Angus McDonald, of the same place, a seaman, aged thirty-five years, from drowning in the South Pacific Ocean on the 25th August, 1898, he having fallen overboard from aloft, striking against the streve pole as he fell, which rendered him insensible. Cozens immediately jumped overboard and got him alongside, and he was hauled on board: Certificate of merit.
1798.—ANDREW GEORGE DOUTHETT, of Newton, New Zealand, a police constable, aged twenty-four years, who rescued Eliza Clements, of Auckland, aged fifty-two years, from drowning, at Auckland, on the 5th June, 1897. Hearing cries of “Man overboard” on the Auckland Wharf, Constable Douthett ran in the direction of the sound, and then, hearing cries for help proceeding from the water (it being then too dark to see any one), dived in, and succeeded in rescuing the woman, who was in a very intoxicated state: Certificate of merit.
1835.—ROBERT HENRY PRICE RONAYNE, of Tinakori Road, Wellington, New Zealand, aged eleven years, who rescued Gordon Morrison, aged nine years, from drowning in Day’s Bay, Wellington, on the 26th January, 1899. Young Morrison, who could not swim, fell off the wharf, when Ronayne at once jumped in and swam with him to the piles: Certificate of merit.
1836.—SAMUEL WESTRUPP, Ferntown, Nelson, New Zealand, aged fifteen years, who rescued Mrs. Patterson and children from drowning in a flood at Ferntown on the 30th January, 1899. Westrupp at 8 p.m. was assisting Mrs. Patterson and children to a place of safety; took one child away to a place of safety, returned, and found all the rest struggling in the water, clinging to a fence. Mrs. Patterson had stumbled and dropped her infant, which was carried away and drowned. Westrupp removed the others into a tree, where they remained all night: Certificate of merit.
