HIS Excellency the Governor has been pleased to issue Letters of Naturalisation, under “The Aliens Act, 1880,” in favour of the under-mentioned persons:—

Notice of the Laying-off of Roads over Lands in Block II., Mawheranui Survey District, Nelson Land District.
NOTICE is hereby given, by direction of His Excellency the Governor of the Colony of New Zealand, under the authority of subsection (5), section 8, of “The East and West Coast (Middle Island) and Nelson Railway and Railways Construction Act, 1884,” that the road described in the Schedule hereto was, on 30th December, 1898, duly taken and laid off through the lands specified in the said Schedule, under the authority of the Governor of the said colony, by warrant dated the 10th October, 1898.

As the said areas are delineated upon the plans marked as above noted, deposited in the District Office of the Lands and Survey Department at Nelson, in the Nelson Land District, and thereon coloured as above mentioned.

Fees to be charged by Licensed Native Interpreters.

THE following scales of fees to be charged by licensed Native interpreters are published for general information.

In the Supreme Court, the Magistrate’s Court, and the Native Land Court, the fees to be charged by interpreters are governed by regulation. The following are the scales now in force:—
- In the Supreme Court (rules of 18th January, 1883, Gazette 1883, page 54):—
For Civil Proceedings.
To an interpreter, if engaged for any time not exceeding one hour .. .. .. £ s. d.

For every additional hour, or fraction of an hour, he may be actually employed beyond that time 0 5 0
But not exceeding one day .. .. .. 2 2 0
In the Magistrate’s Court (regulations of 4th June, 1894, Gazette 1894, page 908):—
For Civil Proceedings.
Interpreter’s fee for interpreting in Court, each case,—
If engaged less than one hour .. .. .. £ s. d.
0 10 6
If engaged over one hour (but not to exceed £2 2s. a day) .. .. .. 1 1 0 to 2 2 0
Filling in Maori duplicate of summons and translating claim,—
If merely a tradesman’s account .. .. .. 0 2 6 to 0 5 0
If there is a statement of claim other than such account, if under 50 words.. .. .. 0 5 0
If over 50 words, per folio of 72 words, after the first 50 .. .. .. 0 5 0
Translating any document required in proceedings, per folio of 72 words .. .. .. 0 5 0
In no case are numerals to count. The above fees are for the document and the duplicate thereof, if required.
An interpreter may also, where necessary, be allowed travelling-expenses on the scale allowed to witnesses.
The Magistrate may in special cases order higher or other fees than the above to be paid to an interpreter.
In the Native Land Court (regulations of 6th March, 1895, Gazette 1895, page 456):—
To an interpreter, if engaged for any time not exceeding one hour .. .. .. £ s. d.

For criminal proceedings in the Supreme and District Courts and before Magistrates or Justices (regulations of 24th April, 1894, Gazette 1894, page 673):—
To an interpreter, if engaged for any time not exceeding one hour .. .. .. £ s. d.

For every additional hour, or fraction of an hour, he may be actually employed beyond that time .. .. .. 0 5 0
But not exceeding, per day .. .. .. 2 2 0
Interpreters will be paid one guinea a day and their actual fares when travelling to and from a Court to interpret.
In proceedings not provided for by any of the above scales:—
Interpretation of deed or other instrument, each time, not exceeding .. .. .. £ s. d.

Translating any deed or other instrument, either into the Maori or English language,—
For the first twelve folios of 72 words, per folio 0 5 0
For each additional folio .. .. .. 0 1 0
Making fair copy of same, per folio.. .. .. 0 1 0
Composing and writing any document in Maori, per folio of 72 words, not exceeding.. 0 5 0
For preparing claims for old-age pensions, and statements of income and property in connection therewith .. .. .. 0 10 6
(Interpreters in Government employ are required to do this work without charge.)
No interpreter is to charge fees in excess of those fixed by the above scales, excepting in agency cases, when the fees may be regulated by agreement entered into in writing.
No interpreter will be allowed to receive fees from both parties to any transaction in which he may be employed.
No licensed interpreter employed by the Government shall act for any private person without the consent of the Minister of his department first obtained.
Any breach of these rules will render the interpreter liable to have his license revoked on complaint being made to the Native Minister.
Subsidies to Public Libraries.
Education Department,
Wellington, 31st October, 1900.
NOTICE is hereby given that the sum of £3,000 has been voted by Parliament for distribution to public libraries.
The distribution will take place on the 8th February, 1901, and no claim will be entitled to consideration that shall not have been sent in in due form and received by the Secretary for Education, Wellington, on or before the 31st January, 1901.
