under the provisions of “The Education Act, 1877,” relating (inter alia) to attendance registers and returns, the payment of capitation allowance to Education Boards for the quarter ending on the 31st day of December, 1899, shall be according to the working-average attendance of the quarter ending on the 30th day of September, 1899, as working average was defined by Order in Council dated the 5th day of July, 1887, and made under the provisions of the before-mentioned Act.

Temporarily reserving Land in the Canterbury Land District.
RANFURLY, Governor.
WHEREAS by the two-hundred-and-thirty-fifth section of “The Land Act, 1892,” it is enacted that the Governor may from time to time, either by general or particular description, and whether the same has been surveyed or not, reserve from sale temporarily, notwithstanding that the same may be then held under pastoral license, any Crown lands which in his opinion are required for any of the purposes in the said section mentioned:
Now, therefore, I, Uchter John Mark, Earl of Ranfurly, the Governor of the Colony of New Zealand, in exercise and pursuance of the powers and authorities vested in me by the said Act, do hereby temporarily reserve from sale the land in the Canterbury Land District described in the Schedule hereunder written for a site for a drill-shed and parade-ground for Volunteers.
SCHEDULE.
ALL that area in the Canterbury Land District, being part of Reserve No. 1373, situate in the Township of Geraldine, containing 25 perches, more or less. Bounded towards the north-west by Talbot Street, 146 links; towards the north-east by the north-eastern boundary of Reserve No. 1373, 95 links; towards the south-east by the south-eastern boundary of said reserve, 150 links; and towards the south-west by a line bearing 104° 5′ 26″, 125 links: be all the aforesaid linkages more or less: as the same is delineated on the plan deposited in the District Survey Office, Christchurch. Also—
All that area in the Canterbury Land District, being Reserve No. 2675, situate in the Township of Geraldine, Geraldine Survey District. Bounded towards the north-west by Talbot Street, 450 links; towards the north by Reserve No. 421; towards the south-east by the continuation of the terrace forming the north-eastern and south-eastern boundaries of said reserve; and towards the south-west by Reserve No. 1373, 95 links: be all the aforesaid linkages more or less: as the same is delineated on the plan deposited in the District Survey Office, Christchurch.
As witness the hand of His Excellency the Governor, this fourth day of October, one thousand eight hundred and ninety-nine.

Rural Lands in the Wellington Land District open for Sale or Selection.
RANFURLY, Governor.
IN pursuance and exercise of the powers and authorities conferred upon me by the one-hundred-and-thirty-sixth section of “The Land Act, 1892,” I, Uchter John Mark, Earl of Ranfurly, the Governor of the Colony of New Zealand, having received the report of the Surveyor-General in this behalf, as in the said section is provided, do hereby declare that the rural lands enumerated in the Schedule hereto shall be open for sale or selection on and after the twenty-ninth day of November, one thousand eight hundred and ninety-nine; and also that the lands mentioned in the said Schedule may, at the option of the applicant, be purchased for cash, or be selected for occupation with right of purchase or on lease in perpetuity, or, in respect of any land containing or supposed to contain any metal, mineral, or valuable stone, be selected on lease in perpetuity only; and I do hereby also fix the prices at which the said lands shall be sold, occupied, or leased, as mentioned in the said Schedule hereto, and do declare that the said lands shall be sold, occupied, or leased under and subject to the provisions of “The Land Act, 1892.”

These sections are situated on the main road from Ohingaiti to Tokaanu, about four miles north of Taihape, from which there is access. They comprise, generally speaking, hilly open land with some small flats, a good portion being undulating with a northerly aspect. The soil is of fair quality, resting on papa formation. There is no bush or scrub on the sections, but they are covered with rough grass, with fern in the gullies. They are fairly watered by permanent streams. The elevation ranges from 1,800 ft. to 2,210 ft. above sea-level.
Section 21 is offered subject to the right of the owners of the fence thereon to remove it.
