IT is hereby notified that, in pursuance and exercise of the power and authority conferred by section 9 of “The Fisheries Conservation Act, 1884,”

JOHN PELLING,

of Sydenham, has been appointed an Officer for the purposes of that Act for that part of the Provincial District of Canterbury to the north of and including the Rakaia River, and for the waters of the Clarence River which are within the County of Marlborough.

Sergeant-Major James Alexander Park, Otago Hussar Volunteers, to be Quartermaster, with the rank of Honorary Lieutenant.

William Dempster Snowball to be Honorary Veterinary Surgeon.

Formation of Infantry Battalion.

HIS Excellency the Governor has been pleased to approve, under paragraphs 211 and 213, Volunteer Regulations, 1895, of the formation of the under-mentioned Volunteer corps in the Otago District into an infantry battalion, under the designation of the “2nd Battalion Otago Rifle Volunteers,” with effect from the 1st day of September, 1899, and with headquarters at Oamaru, and to appoint Lieutenant-Colonel ALFRED HEADLAND, V.D., Unattached Active List, New Zealand Volunteers, to the command of the battalion, with the following staff:—

Captain WALTER HENDERSON, Awarua Rifle Volunteers, to be Adjutant.

Captain JOHN HARKNESS RICE, North Otago District Reserve Corps, to be Quartermaster.

Surgeon-Captain RODERICK ALEXANDER McLEOD, Oreti Rifle Volunteers, to be Medical Officer.

Appointments to date from the 1st day of September, 1899.

COUNTY OF POHANGINA.

Pohangina Farm-homestead Settlement Special Rating District.

THE following is the result of a poll taken on Saturday, the 2nd day of September, 1899, on a proposal of the Pohangina County Council to raise the sum of £1,820 by way of a loan, under the provisions of “The Local Bodies’ Loans Act, 1886,” and amendments, for the purpose of forming and metalling the Table Flat Road and Umutoi Road North and South, and to levy a special rate on the value of the several properties within the above special rating district.

Number of ratepayers on special roll, 26; number of votes exercisable, 26; number of ratepayers who voted for the proposal, 16; number of votes recorded for the proposal, 16; number of ratepayers who voted against the proposal, nil; number of votes recorded against the proposal, nil.
