Notice as to Day for closing under “The Shops and Shop-assistants Act, 1894.”
WHEREAS the local authority mentioned in the first column of the Schedule hereto has duly notified to me that the day upon which the shops in its district shall be closed, pursuant to the provisions of “The Shops and Shop-assistants Act, 1894,” is the day set opposite its name in the second column of the said Schedule: Now, therefore, in exercise of the powers in this behalf conferred upon me by the said Act, I, William Hall-Jones, acting for and on behalf of the Minister of Labour, do hereby appoint that the said day shall be the day upon which all shops within the said district shall be closed.

THE following Notice to Mariners, received from the Marine Board of New South Wales, Sydney, is published for general information.

LIGHTHOUSE, POINT PERPENDICULAR.

Sydney, 21st February, 1899.
REFERRING to the Gazette notice of the 29th July, 1897, it is now notified for general information that on and after the night of Monday, the 1st May next, a first order triple-flashing dioptric white light will be shown from the tower which has been erected at Point Perpendicular, at the Northern Headland of Jervis Bay, at an elevation of 304 ft. above sea-level, in lat. 35° 5′ S., long. 150° 50′ E. This light will exhibit the following characteristics three times a minute, viz. :—

Eclipse, 2 “
Flash, 1¼ “
Eclipse, 2 “
Flash, 0¾ “
Eclipse, 13¼ “
and will be visible 20 miles from seaward in clear weather from S. by W. ¼ W. to N.E. ¼ N. mag. Vessels navigating the coast, by keeping this light in sight, will be clear of all dangers in Wreck Bay to the southward and Crookhaven Bight to the northward.
The old lighthouse structure at Cape St. George will shortly be demolished.

Notice to Mariners, No. 9 of 1899.
NEW PLYMOUTH HARBOUR, NEW DREDGED CHANNEL AT MOTUROA, DAY AND NIGHT SIGNALS.

REFERRING to Notice to Mariners, No. 24 of 1898, issued by this department on the 22nd July, 1898, the New Plymouth Harbour Board notify that the newly dredged channel at Moturoa, straight out from the wharf (which is 130 ft. wide, with an average depth of 12 ft. at low water, spring-tides), is available for vessels to navigate to 11 ft., low water, spring-tides, and the following signals will be shown :—
By Day.—“Come straight in”: Pennant C over burgee B, International Code.
By Night.—“Come straight in”: Two green lights, one on end of wharf, the other 100 ft. in, to mark line of wharf.

Notice to Imprestees under “The Public Revenues Act, 1891.”

EVERY officer holding advances of public money is hereby required to pay to the Public Account, at the nearest branch of the Bank of New Zealand, the unexpended balance in his hand on or before Thursday, the 30th March proximo, and forthwith to transmit to the Treasury at Wellington the bank-receipt for such repayment, together with an account of his expenditure to the same date, as required by clause 4 of the Treasury Regulations.
As respects disbursements which officers may require to make immediately after the close of the financial year, requisitions for the amount required are to be made in such time as to enable them to reach Wellington not later than the 16th March, so that the requisite funds may be placed at the disposal of the officer as soon after the 1st April as possible.

Bonus for the Production of Quicksilver.

NOTICE is hereby given that a bonus of fourpence (4d.) per pound will be paid on the production of the first one hundred thousand pounds weight (100,000lb.) of good marketable retorted quicksilver, free from all impurities, from any mine in New Zealand, on the following conditions, that is to say :—

That at least one-third of the quantity is produced on or before the 31st March, 1900, and the remaining two-thirds on or before the 31st March, 1901.

No bonus will be payable until the whole of the one hundred thousand pounds (100,000 lb.) of quicksilver has been produced as stipulated to the satisfaction of an officer to be appointed by the Minister of Mines, and on whose certificate alone the bonus will be paid.

In the event of more than one person producing the required quantities of quicksilver before the dates named, inquiry will be made by the officer above referred to, when, if it is found that each applicant is equally entitled to a bonus, the amount will be divided in proportion to the quantities produced by each applicant, but in no case shall any bonus be paid until at least one hundred thousand pounds (100,000 lb.) of quicksilver has been produced in the aggregate.

Bonuses for Encouragement of New Zealand Hemp (Phormium tenax) Industry.—Notice No. 535.

BONUS No. 1.
A BONUS of £1,750 is offered for a machine or process for dressing New Zealand hemp (Phormium tenax) which shall be an improvement on the machines or processes now in use, and which shall, after trial, be found to materially reduce the cost of production, improve the product, or increase the quantity of dressed fibre.
The following are the conditions :—

All applications for the bonus must be sent addressed to the Hon. the Minister for Agriculture, Wellington, and must reach him not later than the 31st March, 1900. Each application must be accompanied by a description of the machine or process, particularly stating improvements on present machines or processes, and also the cost at which the machine or process can be supplied.

The applicants must be prepared to submit their machines or processes to examination at such time and place as the Government may direct.

The Government shall appoint a committee of three or more experts, to whom all applications shall be submitted. Such committee shall, after perusal, state what machines or processes they deem worthy of consideration, and may inspect the same at any place within the colony; and, having so inspected the whole or any of them, may direct that the whole or any of them be brought for further trial to such place as they may think fit.
The cost of bringing the machines or appliances on to the ground, from within the colony, supplying the necessary shafting, motive-power, and buildings, to be defrayed by the Government. If any machine sent from beyond the colony is awarded the bonus or part thereof, then the cost of bringing such machine shall be borne by the Government.
The following shall be the basis of the test :—
The committee shall supply a sufficient and equal quantity of green hemp to each machine or process as a test.
