English History.—The general paper in this subject will test whether the candidates are accurately acquainted with the facts of English History, and also possess an intelligent knowledge of the meaning of the facts. The paper on the fixed period will, of course, require from the candidates more minute knowledge than the general paper.
Botany, Chemistry, Physics, Physical Geography, and Geology.—The standard of examination in these subjects will be such as may be reasonably expected from the education given at schools possessing appliances for practical instruction, such as a laboratory, &c. A considerable portion of the marks will be allotted for the proficiency shown in the practical part of the examination.
Chemistry will be limited to elements of inorganic chemistry.
Heat will be limited to the elementary portion of the subject.
Physics will include elementary properties of electricity, magnetism, light, and sound.
Geology, chiefly economic, including the recognition of the more familiar minerals and rocks, and their properties and uses.
Class III.
(Both subjects may be taken up.)
Drawing, freehand; Drawing, geometrical.
Geography.—Simple questions in descriptive and general geography.
General.
Handwriting.—In estimating the papers of candidates, a limited number of marks—namely, 100 out of the maximum allotted to each subject—is assigned for handwriting.

WIROKINO ROAD BOARD.
Special Order.
Notice is hereby given that this Board now make a special rate of 1½d. in the pound on the rateable value of the following properties—viz., Manawatu-Kukutauaki, part 4a 2d (being that half of 4a which joins 8 2d), 8 2d, part 6 2d (being that part of Section 6 which lies between Manawatu River and railway-line), 6b 2d, and parts 7 2d (being those two parts which lie between Tokomaru Stream and railway-line), all inclusive, Block XI., Mount Robinson Survey District (the above-mentioned sections constituting the Otāuru Special Rating District)—to provide for interest and other annual charges on a loan of £150 to be raised under “The Government Loans to Local Bodies Act, 1886,” and its amendments, for the purpose of constructing a road fronting the said sections; such rate to be an annually recurring rate for twenty-six years, to become due and payable in one instalment on the 1st day of June in each and every succeeding year.
I hereby certify that the foregoing special order was duly passed by the Wirokino Road Board at a special meeting held on the 17th day of December, 1898, and confirmed at a special meeting held on the 21st day of January, 1899.

Result of poll taken on 31st January, 1899:—Number of ratepayers on roll, 16, representing 24 votes: Number of ratepayers voting in favour, 7; number of votes recorded in favour, 8; number of ratepayers voting against, 2; number of votes recorded against, 7; number of ratepayers not voting, 7; number of votes not recorded, 9.
A majority of votes not having been recorded in favour of the loan, I therefore declare the proposal to be rejected.

And I accordingly declare the resolution in favour of the said proposal carried.

NOTICE is hereby given, by direction of His Excellency the Governor of the Colony of New Zealand, under the authority of section 92 of “The Public Works Act, 1894,” that the road described in the Schedule hereto was, on the 2nd April, 1896, duly taken and laid off through the land specified in the said Schedule, under the authority of the Governor of the said colony, by a warrant dated the 17th March, 1892.
