to give you notice that the result of the poll of the rate-
payers of the Timaru Harbour District, taken in the several
boroughs, road districts, town districts, ridings, and parts
of ridings situated within the harbour district, on the 4th
day of December, 1899, was as follows:—
For the proposal .. .. .. 2,065 votes.
Against the proposal .. .. .. 754 votes.
The number of votes given for the proposal exceeding the
number given against it by more than one-fourth of the
latter, I declared the resolution in favour of the proposal to
be carried ; and I have now the honour to give you notice
that the said resolution was carried as aforesaid.

THE following notice, received from the Mayor of the
Borough of the City of Auckland, is published in
accordance with the provisions of “The Municipal Corporations Act, 1886,” and “The City of Auckland Borrowing
Act, 1899.”

In the matter of “The Municipal Corporations Act, 1886,”
and “The City of Auckland Borrowing Act, 1899.”
To the Honourable the Colonial Secretary,
Wellington.
I, DAVID GOLDIE, Mayor of the City of Auckland, do hereby,
in pursuance of the provisions of section 184 of “The
Municipal Corporations Act, 1886,” give you notice that on
the 28th day of November, 1899, a poll of the burgesses of
the said city was taken under the provisions of the said Acts,
on a proposal of the Council of the said city to borrow the
sum of £100,000 by way of special loan under the provisions of “The Auckland City Borrowing Act, 1899,” a copy
of which proposal is hereunto set out.
AUCKLAND CITY COUNCIL.
Proposed Special Loan of £100,000.
Proposal to borrow the sum of £100,000, at a rate of
interest not exceeding 4 per centum per annum, during the
years and for the purpose following, viz. :—
Any sum not exceeding £50,000 at any time during the
year 1900 ;
Any further sum not exceeding £10,000 at any time
during the year 1901 ;
Any further sum not exceeding £10,000 at any time
during the year 1902 ;
Any further sum not exceeding £10,000 at any time
during the year 1903 ;
Any further sum not exceeding £10,000 at any time
during the year 1904 ;
Any further sum not exceeding £10,000 at any time
during the year 1905.
Such loan shall be raised and expended exclusively for the
purposes following, that is to say,—

In payment of such commission, charges, and expenses,
including the cost of obtaining this Act, as the Council may
determine to have been actually incurred in connection
with such loan. -
Repayment of existing overdraft at the National Bank
of New Zealand (Limited), at Auckland, of about £30,000,
and for the construction of the following works : namely,
drainage, £44,354 ; auxiliary water-supply, £12,000 ; purchase of land and the erection of necessary buildings for a
fire-brigade station and housing of firemen, horses, and
appliances, £3,000 ; and paving with wood or asphalt or
other approved material Queen Street, Auckland, £10,646.

And I also give you notice that the following was the
result of the said poll:—
Number of ratepayers and burgesses who voted in favour
of the said proposal, 895 ; number of votes to which the
ratepayers and burgesses were entitled, 895 ; number of
ratepayers and burgesses who voted against the said proposal,
77 ; number of votes to which the last-mentioned rate-
payers and burgesses were entitled, 77 ; number of informal
votes, 11.
I hereby give you notice that the said proposal was
carried.

In the matter of “The Municipal Corporations Act, 1886,”
and “The Auckland City Borrowing Act, 1899.”
I, David Goldie, of the City of Auckland, New Zealand,
timber-merchant, Mayor of the City of Auckland, do
solemnly and sincerely declare,—

That all proceedings required to be taken by “The
Auckland City Borrowing Act, 1899,” in or towards obtaining the sanction of the burgesses of the City of Auckland to
a proposal of the Council of the said city to borrow the sum
of £100,000 by way of special loan under the provisions of
the said Act have been duly taken. -
That, upon a poll of the ratepayers and burgesses of
the said city taken on the 28th day of November, 1899, the
said proposal was duly carried.
And I make this solemn declaration conscientiously believing the same to be true, and by virtue of the provisions
of an Act of the General Assembly of New Zealand intituled
“The Justices of the Peace Act, 1882.”

Notice of the Laying-off of Road through Waikopiro B Block,
Takapau Survey District.
NOTICE is hereby given, by direction of His Excellency
the Governor of the Colony of New Zealand, under
the authority of section 92 of “The Public Works Act,
1894,” that the road described in the Schedule hereto was,
in October, 1898, duly taken and laid off through the
land specified in the said Schedule, under the authority of
the Governor of the said colony, by a warrant dated the
28th November, 1896.

information.

SIR,—With reference to previous circular despatches respecting the arrangements for the distribution of colonial
nominations to naval cadetships, I have the honour to
inform you that there was an unusually large number of
applicants for nominations for the present year, and that in
more than one instance Governors of colonies appeared to
have given candidates to understand that, having secured
priority of application, their claims would be likely to be
favourably considered. As such an understanding is likely
to raise hopes on the part of a candidate which may not be
realised, I have to request that, whenever you may have
occasion to entertain an application, every precaution may
be taken to guard against giving undue encouragement to
the friends of candidates, who might, when necessary, be
