Altering the Name of the Town of Birmingham.

A PROCLAMATION.

WHEREAS by sections two and three of “The Designation of Districts Act, 1894” (hereinafter termed “the said Act”), it is provided that the Governor in Council may, at the request or with the consent of the Council of any county, city, or borough, alter the geographical name or designation of any place or locality in the colony:

And whereas the Kiwitea County Council has requested that the present name of “Birmingham,” within the County of Kiwitea, be altered as hereinafter mentioned, and it appears expedient to comply with such request:

Now, therefore, I, Uchter John Mark, Earl of Ranfurly, the Governor of the Colony of New Zealand, acting by and with the consent of the Executive Council of the said colony, do hereby proclaim and declare that the Township of Birmingham, in the County of Kiwitea aforesaid, shall, on and after the fourth day of February, one thousand eight hundred and ninety-nine, be called and known by the name of “Kimbolton,” and the name of the said Township of Birmingham is hereby altered accordingly.

Given under the hand of His Excellency the Right Honourable Uchter John Mark, Earl of Ranfurly; Knight Commander of the Most Distinguished Order of Saint Michael and Saint George; Governor and Commander-in-Chief in and over Her Majesty’s Colony of New Zealand and its Dependencies; and issued under the Seal of the said Colony, at the Government House, at Wellington, this first day of August, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and ninety-eight.

Additional Land taken in Takapau Survey District for the Purposes of the Wellington-Napier Railway.

A PROCLAMATION.

WHEREAS it has been found desirable for the use, convenience, and enjoyment of the Wellington-Napier Railway to take further land in Takapau Survey District, in addition to land previously acquired for the purposes of the said railway:

Now, therefore, I, Uchter John Mark, Earl of Ranfurly, the Governor of the Colony of New Zealand, in exercise of the powers and authorities conferred on me by sections twenty-eight and one hundred and sixty-seven of “The Public Works Act, 1894,” and of every other power and authority in anywise enabling me in this behalf, do hereby proclaim and declare that the land mentioned in the Schedule hereto is taken for the purposes above mentioned.

Rates of Postage on Magazines and Printed Papers.

ORDER IN COUNCIL.

At the Government Buildings, at Wellington, this seventh day of December, 1898.

Present:

THE HONOURABLE A. J. CADMAN PRESIDING IN COUNCIL.

WHEREAS by Order in Council dated the third day of February, one thousand eight hundred and ninety-six, and published in the New Zealand Gazette of the thirteenth day of February, one thousand eight hundred and ninety-six, certain regulations were made and rates of postage fixed, under the authority of “The Post Office Act, 1881,” for the transmission of printed papers (including books) and commercial papers through the post: And whereas it is expedient to alter and amend such regulations and rates of postage in so far as they apply to the printed papers called magazines:

Now, therefore, His Excellency the Governor of the Colony of New Zealand, in pursuance of the power and authority conferred by “The Post Office Act, 1881,” and of all other powers and authorities enabling him in this behalf, and acting by and with the advice and consent of the Executive Council of the said colony, doth hereby abolish the rates of postage for printed papers in the said Order in Council set forth, and in lieu thereof doth order and declare that the rates of postage for such printed papers shall be those set forth in Schedule I. hereto; and, in exercise of the like power, and with like advice and consent as aforesaid, His Excellency the Governor doth hereby make the regulation set forth in Schedule II. hereto, and doth hereby order and declare that such rates of postage and such regulation respectively shall come into force on and after the first day of January, one thousand eight hundred and ninety-nine.


SCHEDULE I.

  1. The postage for printed papers, except newspapers and registered magazines, is—

To any place within or beyond New Zealand, excepting Queensland .. ½d. per 2 oz.

To Queensland

Printed books, pamphlets, printed music, photographs, and generally anything printed and published in book form, excepting catalogues and reports of societies or companies
} 1d. per 4 oz.

Catalogues, reports of societies or companies, and other articles defined as printed papers
} 1d. per 2 oz.

  1. Copies of Hansard, if enclosed in the authorised wrapper, will be sent free of charge to any place within the colony.

Registered Magazines.

  1. The postage for registered magazines is—

To places in New Zealand and the Australian Colonies, except Queensland: For the first 8 oz., 1d.; for every additional 4 oz., ½d.

To Queensland: For the first 4 oz., 1d.; for every additional 4 oz., 1d.

To other places: As for printed papers.
