Rural Lands in the Wellington Land District open for Sale or Selection.
RANFURLY, Governor.
IN pursuance and exercise of the powers and authorities conferred upon me by the one-hundred-and-thirty-sixth section of “The Land Act, 1892,” I, Uchter John Mark, Earl of Ranfurly, the Governor of the Colony of New Zealand, having received the report of the Surveyor-General in this behalf, as in the said section is provided, do hereby declare that the rural lands enumerated in the Schedule hereto shall be open for sale or selection on and after the twenty-ninth day of December, one thousand eight hundred and ninety-eight; and also that the lands mentioned in the said Schedule may, at the option of the applicant, be purchased for cash, or be selected for occupation with right of purchase or on lease in perpetuity, or, in respect of any land containing or supposed to contain any metal, mineral, or valuable stone, be selected on lease in perpetuity only; and I do hereby also fix the prices at which the said lands shall be sold, occupied, or leased, as mentioned in the said Schedule hereto, and do declare that the said lands shall be sold, occupied, or leased under and subject to the provisions of “The Land Act, 1892.”

Section 9, Block XIV., Manganui District: The section is situated in the Marton No. 3 Block. The access is from Raetihi, which is about seven miles distant, six miles of which is by a formed dray-road, the remaining mile being a surveyed road only. The section comprises hilly forest country on a papa formation, and is well watered.
Section 10, Block XIV., Manganui District: The section is situated in the Marton No. 3 Block. The access is from Raetihi, which is about eight miles distant, via the Makotuku Valley and Manganui-a-te-ao Roads, which are formed for dray traffic for six miles, the remainder being surveyed road only. The section comprises hilly forest country on a papa formation, and is well watered.
Section 21, Block XIV., Manganui: The section is situated in the Marton No. 3 Block. The access is from Raetihi, which is about seven miles and a half distant, via the Makotuku Valley and Manganui-a-te-ao Roads, six miles of which are formed for dray traffic, the remainder being surveyed road only. The section comprises hilly and undulating land, resting on papa formation, with mixed forest of the ordinary character.
Section 4, Block XIII., Maungakaretu District: The section is situated in the Hunterville No. 1 Block. The access is from Hunterville, which is about twenty-six miles distant, via the Ongo and Turakina Valley Roads, seventeen miles of which are formed for dray-road, eight miles a formed bridle-track, and the remainder a rough pack-track only. The section, with the exception of from 20 to 30 acres of practically flat land, is hilly and broken. The soil is of good quality, resting on papa formation. The forest is mixed, comprising rimu, matai, kahikatea, and a few totaras, and the usual undergrowth. The section is watered by the Turakina River and small streams.
Section 4, Block XV., Maungakaretu District: The section is situated on the Panemango Road, in the Hunterville No. 1 (Pohonuiatane) Block. The access is from Hunterville, which is about thirty-two miles distant, via the Ongo, Turakina Valley, Mangamahoe, and Panemango Roads, which are formed for dray traffic for about seventeen miles, another eleven miles are formed bridle-track, the rest is rough pack-track. The outlet for this section will eventually be Taihape, distance about sixteen miles, twelve miles of which are formed bridle-track, the rest not formed. The section comprises, generally speaking, hilly and undulating land, with a few flats occasionally. There are a few acres open land in natural grass near the Panemango Road. The soil is of fair quality, resting on papa formation. The forest is rather light, comprising rimu, matai, manuka, tawa, rata, &c., with a thick undergrowth of the usual character. The section is fairly well watered by small streams. The improvements comprise an old whare, much out of repair, value £5.
Section 8, Block III., Tiriraukawa District: The section is situated in the Palmerston North Knights of Labour Block, in the Te Kapua Block, on the Pukemapou Road. The access is from Hunterville, which is about twenty-six miles distant, via the Watershed Road, Murray’s Track, and Pukemapou Road, which are formed for dray traffic for a distance of about nineteen miles; the rest is formed bridle-track. The section comprises, generally speaking, hilly forest country, with small flats. There is a steep gorge running through the back of the section. The soil is of fair quality, resting on papa formation. The forest is rather heavy throughout, and comprises rimu, miro, matai, tawa, rata, &c., with a thick undergrowth of the usual kind. The section is well watered by small streams. The elevation ranges from about 1,600 ft. to 1,800 ft. above sea-level.
Section 11, Block V., Hautapu District: The section is situated in the Upper Makohine Block, west of Mangaweka. The access is from Mangaweka, which is about nine miles distant, via the Mangaweka–Makohine and Makohine Valley Road, five miles of which are formed bridle-track, the rest being a surveyed road only. The section comprises hilly and broken country, with soil of good quality, resting on papa formation. The forest is of a mixed character, comprising rimu, kahikatea, matai, maire, hinau, with totara scattered on ridges.
Section 10, Block XIII., Ruahine District: The section is situated in the Marton No. 2 Block, on the Mania Road. The access is from Rangiwahia, which is about five miles distant, via Mangawhariki, Aputu, and Mania Roads, which are formed for dray traffic to within one mile of the section, the remainder being formed bridle-track. It is also accessible from Mangaweka, about thirteen miles. The section comprises mostly broken country, with a few occasional flats here and there. The soil is of good quality, resting on papa formation. The forest is mixed, comprising rimu, matai, tawa, rata, &c., with the usual undergrowth. The section is well watered by running streams and the Mangawhariki River. The improvements comprise 30 acres grassed, valued at £60.
