Rural Lands in the Wellington Land District open for Sale or Selection.

IN pursuance and exercise of the powers and authorities conferred upon me by the one-hundred-and-thirty-sixth section of “The Land Act, 1892,” I, Uchter John Mark, Earl of Ranfurly, the Governor of the Colony of New Zealand, having received the report of the Surveyor-General in this behalf, as in the said section is provided, do hereby declare that the rural lands enumerated in the Schedule hereto shall be open for sale or selection on and after the fifth day of October, one thousand eight hundred and ninety-eight; and also that the lands mentioned in the said Schedule may, at the option of the applicant, be purchased for cash, or be selected for occupation with right of purchase or on lease in perpetuity, or, in respect of any land containing or supposed to contain any metal, mineral, or valuable stone, be selected on lease in perpetuity only; and I do hereby also fix the prices at which the said lands shall be sold, occupied, or leased, as mentioned in the said Schedule hereto, and do declare that the said lands shall be sold, occupied, or leased under and subject to the provisions of “The Land Act, 1892.”

Section 46, Block VII., Tararua, is situated on the Mangaroa Road, the access being from Newman Railway-station, which is about nine miles distant, eight miles of which is a metalled road, and the remaining mile a formed road; it is also distant about seven miles from the Hukanui Railway-station by a partly metalled and partly formed dray-road. There is a post-office, store, &c., both at Newman and Hukanui. The area comprises hilly land with about 10 acres of flat. The soil is clayey and of fair quality, resting on papa formation. The forest is of a mixed character, comprising rimu, rata, birch, kahikatea, tawa, &c., and an undergrowth of tawa, konini, supplejack, &c. The land is watered by a creek.

Section 10, Block XIII., Mangahao, is situated about twelve miles from Pahiatua, the access being from the main coach-road, which is about six miles distant by the Tutaekara Road, which is metalled to within half a mile of the section, the remainder of the distance being a bridle-track. Tutaekara Railway-station is about four miles away from the section. The land comprises low, flat-topped, hilly forest country, 50 acres of which is fairly flat. Part of the road-frontage is steep. The soil is of good quality, and rests on a papa formation. The forest is heavy, comprising chiefly rimu, rata, tawa, and rewarewa, &c., with a dense undergrowth of supplejack, konini, whitewood, &c. The section is partly watered by a stream. The section is weighted with £60 for improvements, comprising about 30 acres of clearing and grassing.

Section 8, Block XIII., Mangahao, is situated about fourteen miles from Pahiatua, the access being from the main coach-road, which is about eight miles distant, six miles of which is by the Tutaekara Road, which is metalled, and two miles by the Kopikopiko Road, which is part bridle-track and part cleared only. Tutaekara Railway-station is about six miles and Hukanui Railway-station about five miles distant from the section via the Pukohai and Kopikopiko Roads, two miles of which distance is formed dray-road, two miles bridle-track, and one mile road which is surveyed only and is not yet open for horse traffic. Generally speaking, the section comprises undulating forest country, with about 40 acres of fairly flat land. The soil is of medium quality, and rests on a papa formation. The forest is heavy, comprising chiefly rimu, rata, tawa, and rewarewa, &c., with a dense undergrowth of supplejack, konini, lawyer, &c. The section is well watered by a stream. The section is weighted with £70 for improvements, comprising about 35 acres cleared and grassed.

Section 13, Block XIII., Mangahao: The access to this section is from Hukanui Railway-station, which is about five miles distant, by two miles of road cleared for dray traffic, two miles of bridle-track, and one mile of road which is cleared only. Tutaekara Railway-station is about seven miles distant, by four miles of metalled road, two miles of bridle-track, and one mile of rough walking-track, which is not open for horse traffic at present. The section comprises hilly and undulating forest country, with about 50 acres of flat land on the front portion. The soil is of medium quality, resting on papa formation. The forest ranges from medium to heavy, and comprises chiefly rimu and birch, with a light undergrowth of supplejack, rangiora, ground-fern, &c. The section is well watered by a stream.

Section 21, Block XIII., Mangahao: The access to this section is from Hukanui Railway-station, which is about five miles distant, by two miles of road cleared for dray traffic, two miles of bridle-track, and one mile of road which is cleared only. Tutaekara Railway-station is about seven miles distant, by four miles of metalled road, two miles of bridle-track, and a mile of rough walking-track, which is not yet open for horse traffic. The section comprises hilly and broken forest country, with a small area of flat land near the road. The soil is poor and stony on the ridges, resting on rotten-rock formation. The forest is light on the ridges and heavy in the gullies, and comprises chiefly rimu, tawa, birch, and stunted rata, with a light undergrowth of konini, vines, ground-fern, &c. The section is watered by a stream.

Section 16, Block V., Aohanga: The access to this section is from Rakaunui, which is about eight miles distant by a good horse-track along the Huia Road. The area comprises hilly land, with a fairly good homestead-site on the Huia Stream. It rises from the front to the back, and is rather steep in places. The soil is clay, of good quality, and is resting on papa formation. The forest is light, and comprises chiefly manuka scrub, with patches of matai, totara, and kahikatea. The section is well watered by the Huia Stream. The improvements comprise a few acres of bush accidentally burned, over which grass has spread.
